    Hello!

I am holding onto a Packard Bell laptop now. Initially I face frequent hanging while using it. So after consulting Packard Bell, it was a harddisk problem. So I bought a new harddisk and got it installed into the laptop.

But heres the problem. I couldn't complete the installation of Windows onto the brand new HDD. I received an error once saying some winsxs error, and then the next error I received was during the bootup screen with the "Error 0200: Fixed Disk Failure".

Could it be this brand new harddisk of mine is faulty as well? Or could it be other hardware problems? I ran some RAM tests using gold memory ram test but the RAMs seems ok.

I would appreciate any help given. =D Thanks!

    Hi

Yes, it's definitely quite possible that the new hard drive is bad. Hard drives are finicky, and when purchasing them, I ALWAYS look for one with MANY good reviews. Even when getting "good ones" though, the occasional hard drive goes bad within a week.

If I were you, I'd RMA the new hard drive and try again.

    Thanks mcsmc!

Well, I guess I have no other choice then. Thanks anyway. =D

Was the new HD recognized at all? I mean was it seen by the BIOS and you initially were able to begin installation of Windows?

I'm thinking it could be the drive controller that is faulty but on a laptop this is bad news. Or else if it was not recognized at all perhaps you don't have the new drive seated correctly.

The drive was recgonized. In fact Windows Vista actually finished its first part of installation. And then when the "Please Restart Your Computer" part comes in, I restarted without a problem, but when it was trying to load into Windows, it died.

It still shows the Error 0200 on bootup though.

It seems like it was installed correctly.

I don't know it could be a bad drive. I guess it couldn't hurt to have them replace it. If the replacement acts the same way then you know it is something else.

Have you tried the Vista installation more than once?

Yeap, I tried multiple times. In fact there was once I zero filled the drive before trying to install. But it turns out the same way. Well, I guess it was bad luck to have a possibly faulty drive as a new one.

Oh yes! I forgot. I did some HDD health tests using Seagate Seatools. And the tests indicated the HDD was healthy. Could it be a mainboard or HDD controller issue?

Unfortunately, it could be the HDD controller and in laptops that probably means replacing the MB which is (too) expensive.

The first HD didn't give that exact error it just froze sometimes. The new one is the first time you see this error? Did you install it yourself or have it installed?

I installed it myself. And yeah, I am facing this error ever since I installed the HDD in. Which means there was never once I've completed installing Windows Vista into this new HDD.

It is possible you don't have it completely in place correctly. Sometimes getting laptop parts in is tricky. I know I have fought with RAM modules for half an hour before getting them right. But I can't see how it could get through most of the Vista setup if it was in wrong or not quite snug. The Vista setup goes through the whole 30 minute setup before the error?

You could try putting the old HD back in and seeing if it works as it did before. That way you could test if you are seating the drive completely.

I'm just guessing here since the SeaGate test came out OK.

I could try resitting it again.

Yeah, the vista installation goes through the entire 30 minutes set up, up till the point where you are prompted to restart the computer. So after restarting, the problem kicks in. =/

What is strange is that you must have one restart previous to the final restart. Installation runs off the CD then restarts and runs either off of the HD or virtual memory (I'm not sure which). Then copies more files and tries to start Vista.

Which model PB laptop is it? I'm wondering if others with the same model have had similar issues.

Hermo..Hera-C. old model. Its running on dual core. From what I am experiencing, the installation could not go into the 'off CD installation stage'.

Right now I am at 90% of the 'Expanding Files' stage in the installation.

installation still doesnt pass. I am doing more diagnostic tests on the HDD now. Currently running the SMART Immediate Test.

all tests passed. could it be a hdd controller issue?
