I had Acrobat Reader 7.0 and was trying to load 9.3 it got about 90% through and then errored with:

Error 1402. Could not open Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\IMAIL. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

I went to regedit (created a backup) and went to the above location and the permissions on the OptionalComponents has the group "Everyone" with Allow checked for Full control and Read. On IMAIL nothing in group. When I tried to follow instructions for adding Administrators to the OptionalComponents, it gives an error "Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys.". When I tried on the IMAIL, it said "Unable to set new owner on IMAIL. Access is denied."

I wasn't able to find anymore info on what to do and I'm way out of my league even on the above (I was following instructions from the Acrobat website). Help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you uninstall v7 and reboot before you attempted to install v9?
    Removal instructions for v7:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/400/kb400654.html

Is this what you have been following? If not can you point me to the directions you've been using.

I didn't uninstall anything, but I don't have anything to remove on the old version. But I went through the steps on the URL you had because I wasn't sure what it might do. I then went back and reread the steps I had from Acrobat at the URL http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/329/329137.html and found I had misunderstood the directions and that the procedure was to be done without closing the installer (leave it with the error). Once I followed the instructions to the letter (sometimes you just can't follow instructions no matter how hard you tried :-o ) it worked and I was able to complete the installation. Thank you for responding it's always nice to have help!!

I have a similar problem. When I try to repair or remove adobe reader 8.2 via add/remove in control panel I get
"Error 1402 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel"
I tried installing version 9 seperately and the same error comes up. I have tried editing the permissions on that MSFS key several different ways and the error keeps appearing with any attempt at a repair, remove or install function. I would appreciate any help. Thank you in advance.
