error 692

i tried dialing up to the internet when it gives me an error message.

Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem(or other connecting device.

i know that the phone line works because i tried it with a phone. It is a Best Data 56SX-92 56K data, fax, voice modem. the os is Win 2000 professional with SP4. the modem has worked before, but it has not been used in a while. When i check the properties of the modem it says that it is working correctly.

The computer also says "check that the interrupt is set correctly" when i query the modem. the interrupt is currently set at 4. and what is the interrupt anyway?
