Error connecting to socket

Hey,

I have an ftp server set up on my home computer, using GuildFTPd as server software. It's connected to a D-Link DI-604 broadband router then on to my cable modem. The problem is that I get an 'Error connecting to socket' as soon as I try to log on to my ftp server from any computer over the internet.

Following things I have tried:
Double- and tripple checked firewall settings, and just to make sure I set up the server directly to the cable modem, skipping the router. No go.

Double- and tripple checked GuildFTPd settings, and they work if I connect to my server on the local network, which should imply them to be OK.

Just to make sure I tried ServU ftp server, same problem there.

The XP internal firewall is disabled.

What I suspect is that some software (probably MS patch/update) stops it from connecting. I'm not a very big fan of SP2, maybe that's the source? Have tried to uninstall it but it seems to be one of those 'not-giong-to-happen' scenarios. Thought about the BITS-update as well but it seems drastic, doesn't it?

I've tried to set up the exact same server/network at work and it gives me the same problem. Plus, at a customer of mine I had no luck either. The only thing common to all places (network-wise) is MS, other than that nothing I can think of.

Please tell me there's a fix for this coz I'm going crazy here..!

quick thought .. put that pc with the ftp server in your router's dmz..
If you don't need the security of a true ftp and just want to share files try
http file server. Also try that and see if it is just ftp connections that are having problems.

 

you need to forward PORT 21 to the machine that is the FTP host. This requires (well, highly suggested) to use a static IP for that machine.
