XP Pro SP2; Office 2007 Home/Student Edition full retail disc. Shortly after entering the product key, the progress indicator bar gets up to maybe a half inch in length, it sits for a second or two, then goes backward and Office says "Setup encountered an error during installation and could not continue." And that's it. No info, no link to click on, no error code, nothing. I attached a screen shot of the event viewer if that helps. Here's what has been done on this PC so far:
When the owner brought it to me, he had completely messed up the file associations for everything; when I tried to open drive C: the Windows search dialog would open; when I tried to open a regular folder the OneNote application would open; something called "Solution Center" ands something called "Status" were messed up in the MSinstaller so I used the cleanup tool to fix those; the wallpaper was messed up and (in low-color 8 bit mode when a picture was there, otherwise it was just blank white) when I'd right click the background, Internet Exloprer would open, it was like the desktop wallpaper had been assigned to a web site, well, it was, and I fixed that. I ran SFC, Dial-A-Fix, MSInstaller CleanUp, and I manually reset all the file associations. Office was installed but completely corrupt and couldn't be uninstalled by using normal methods, and couldn't be re-installed by normal methods. I had to use Revo and CCleaner and manual file removal to completely get Office out so I could try to reload it. Before trying to reload Office, I fixed all the above problems and then performed a safe reload of XP Pro. All that has gone well and now the only remaining issue is the error during Officed 2007 install.

    H E L P ! ! ! ! ! :cry

(the owner of this laptop is one of these people that cannot just leave things alone. I fix this same PC probably 3 times a months for the past 4 months. He gets these 'brilliant' ideas in his head about how he can make things better: if he wants Word on the desktop, instead of just creating a shortcut, he moved the Office folder from Program Files to the desktop, he did the same thing several other programs).

    The mst-file is probably corrupt.

In order to get more information about the failure of the installer bring up a cmd and type in:

    msiexec.exe /i product.msi /l* c:\log file name.txt

It will go through the installer as normal but will create a log file that you can look at.

recreat the mst-template and saved it with a different name than the previous one, run the installer on the CLI.

You may wish to look at this:
[SIZE=-1]Go to HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer, "DisableMSI" was set to 2. Setting it to 0 resolved the issue.

Probably not real clear so I'll give it again:
You will probably find a bad reg file.

Thanks Tim... I wish I would have checked back here sooner. I did finally get Office to load. Even though it had been removed, the installer log still had numerous Office related entries. I thought that installing the newest MSinstaller (v4.5) would have cleared the install log, but apparantly not. After I cleaned all the Office entries out using the clean up tool, it installed. I then tried to install some other software and it kept erroring out too. The PCs owner called me up and said "the heck with it! Just wipe it out! I need it back tonite!" so I saved his documents (even though he said he didn't need 'em) and formatted and reloaded the OS, drivers, Office.... Thanks for the info though, I'll try to save a link to this thread for next time, and with this user, there will be a next time, probably next week some time....
    Thanks again....

Thanks, plodr, that link was helpful.

Also helpful was Cat W 9 Lives' advice: "Start > Run > D:\setup.exe (D could = E or other, it's the CD drive)."

Between installing the Windows program you mentioned and typing in that simple phrase, I was able to install my Microsoft 2007 office program. MS instructions are the worst but you guys rock!
