Your best bet is to check the temperatures of the video card and the processor. You can find software on this site to tell you those things. Usually if windows XP locks up it's because of a HW error and overheating is a fairly common problem.

Try checking DR WATSON for any clues.

Also, run the DirectX diagnostic tool. Go to Start, Run and type in dxdiag then O.K.

Run the tests in there and check for any errors.

I did the dxdiag and nothing seems to be wrong

and dr watson cant find anything either

How exactly did you use Dr Watson?

    start > run > drwatson

Dr. Watson found nothing obviously unusual.

You have to start it, run it in the background (small icon in systry), then try to recreate the error.

Then you can check the log and see if it "detected" it.

Does it do it in Safe Mode?

I cant do it in safe mode
it requires certain display drivers that cannot be used in safe mode

Yeah, I just re-read your original post and saw it was a game, so you're right it won't work in Safe Mode.

That makes it harder and Windows 98 doesn't have much in the way of diagnostic tools unless you like DOS.

Try the basic things first like uninstalling completely then reinstalling the game, and update your video card drivers and DirectX to the latest ones.

If the above fails, then try System Information located in Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then System Information.

Check the entries in there for any errors, and also under the Tools menu are some utilities that may help.

Just to clarify something, there is nothing else wrong with your PC apart from freezing from a particular game, is that right?

Ok i did all you said and the problem continunes

and yep the problem is only in this game

Well if you tried all I suggested above then you are fast running out of options.

I assume you have tried System File Checker if you tried all the tools in System Information? Did you try the Registry checker etc in there as well?

If you have done all that and checked there are no known issues with this game (what is it by the way?), then I only have one or two suggestions left.

Use msconfig (start, run and type it in), go to the Startup tab and do a screenshot and post it here.

If you know what you are doing in there then you can uncheck them one by one until you find the culprit. (I'd still like the screenshot if you can)

Can you isolate anything you did or installed when this issue started?

As far as the screenshot, I'm curious as to why you have an ASUS video card utility (anvshell), as well as running the nVidia one?

I would leave SystemTray, ScanRegistry, LoadPowerProfile, NvCplDaemon, and the second LoadPowerProfile all checked, and uncheck the rest and reboot and try again.

Have you tried adjusting the settings in the game to one a bit lower or less agressive to see if that helps?

If this persists then you will need to provide a lot more feedback, however apart from installing Windows over itself and unless you suddenly remember something relevant, then I don't have any more suggestions but maybe someone else may?

What do you mean by isolate?

When i installed the asus driver both utilities were installed too
    i dont know why

    what more should i provide?

btw thx for trying to help

Can you think of anything you did around the same period as this started?

For example, you installed a particular piece of software/hardware or changed a setting.

Whether it's connected to your problem or not, you shouldn't have nor need that many video card utilities. Uninstall them all, then download and install the latest nVidea drivers. (It is an nVidia isn't it?)

As far as "what more should i provide?", I asked for more information because you don't specifically state what you did or didn't do, so it's very hard getting feedback.

I know it's a pain typing, but it makes life easier for everyone so don't hold back and include as much information as possible. EG, you still haven't told me if you have unchecked those items in Startup tab as I explained?

To be honest mate, I don't think MK Trilogy runs on Windows 98.

LOL, thanks for that mate, I wish you were here a couple of days ago though!

I'm not at all familiar with the game, but I had a quick look and didn't realise it was an old DOS based game, which are always buggy even when they are working.

Prion, has this game ever worked?

I had a look at system requirements for the game and it mentions 95 or DOS, but didn't mention 98.

It may have been an old listing and not updated, but if it's accurate then why did we go through almost 3 days of this?

    Prion Private E-2

    Its not accurate
the requirements say windows 95 cause the game was made in 96
and windows 98 did not exist then.

In fact i know of cases its run on 98 and even XP(with a small patch)

    As for the feedback
i did everything you asked, the scans with system info
    and unchecked on msconfig

and the game kind of worked for me
i managed to play it for up to 30 minutes without it getting stuck

I said it may have been an old listing and not updated.

However, I should have asked and checked what sort of game it was, not so I wouldn't offer any assistance, but so I didn't chase dead ends.

These sort of games are notorius for doing this. I have a couple, and although I really like them I just don't bother anymore.

What makes it worse is that the developers are no longer around so there is no support or updates, basically you sort it out or too bad.

What did you do to get the game to run for 30 mins?
