Error messages on everything

My computer caught a yucky bug. Did a thorough scan with Mcafee. I had avast installed but just got stuck when trying to scan, as did 2 other programs. McAfee was the only one I could find that actually carried on working.

But now my system is throwing error messages about everything.
    rstrui.exe
    mcuimgr.exe
    update.exe
    mcagent.exe
    spoolersv.exe
These all throw up as an Application error.

I also get unable to read memory with these files:
    usbehci.sys, directdb.dll, inetcomm.dll, msoe.dll, wab32.dll, wmploc.dll pctstray.exe, msoobe.exe plus many more I am sure.

Looking at my program list I have no updates/service packs installed from Microsoft (I had them all before). But I am unable to install them, it just throws up error messages at me.

I've got my blue star thing showing up in the bottom r/h/corner stating that my XP is unstable and to install the updates - but it won't let me.

Anyone got any ideas before I venture down to my shed and find some a tool to commit pc murder.

I tried the XP upgrade using my XP disc, but it has made no difference whatsoever.

Just as an extra bit of info.

I just tried to check the event viewer to see if anything showed up and unable to access that. I just get yet another error message mmc.exe Application error.

Unable to access system restore as well. But when I was able to access it a few days ago, all my restore points before this ****bug entered my system were wiped out.

    Aaaaaarh.

Hi Lisa and welcome to MajorGeeks!:major

As you had a nasty bug this is most likely what is continuing to cause problems for you. To troubleshoot the ongoing issues you have would most likely be a waste of time until it is determined that your system is actually cleaned out.

My suggestion would be for you to follow all the steps outlined here > READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide < and attach the requested logs when you are done so they can be reviewed by one of our malware experts.

Will move your thread to the malware forum so that you can contiue this thread there.

    Good luck!:)

    First problem encountered.

My Mcafee installation has been wiped. I want to get rid of avast and reinstall Mcafee. But when I go to add/remove programs - no programs come up, there is no list at all. Is there another way to delete avast from my system without using the windows add/remove program?

It would be best to skip that part for now.....first run ComboFix as instructed, then continue on with the rest of the scans. If you encounter a problem, let us know what it was, but also just continue on with the next scan.

We need to see as many of the logs as you can run. :)

I have just posted my scan results - whilst most of the error messages have gone, the system is till very unstable and freezes.

Thank you everyone for your help it is very much appreciated.
