I've got this error twice now,and it says if you see this same error more than once to check to make sure any hardware or software is properly installed.
But thats another problem b/c I've installed so much software in the last month I don't know how to tell which piece of software is not insatalled properly. Also my monitor isn't working properly,it's color is all messed up and now I'm wondering if this "error" has anything to do with it.

    Here's the error:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time youv'e seen this screen, restart computer. If screen appears againg, follow these steps:

check and make sure any new harware or software is properly installed. If this is a new instalation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If the problem continues, disable or remove any newly insatlled hardware or software.Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode heres how.................

Do you have Outpost installed? Try uninstalling it or upgrading to the latest version and see if the problem persists.

    Hey doug,
Sorry it took so long to respond. So I did as you said and uninstalled outpost firewall, and also uninstalled Tauscin trojin remover. My pc has not shutdown and shown that error yet,but It usually seems fine for about a week then out of no where it just shuts down with that same error message. Why do you think that outpost has something to do with it?

    Hey Insomniac,
So I looked at the post you linked me to,and yes her problem is similiar but I"m still not exacly sure what to do to resovle this issue.Today,my computer atomatically restarted on me again, but this time it skipped the usual message(the one that is posted below)and gave me this new message after the pc was entirley rebooted:"The system has just recovered from a serious error"
So I looked on the support section of Microsoft and they said to download this patch to fix the problem.I downloaded it,but when I installed it, it told me that in order to use the patch I had to have NO service packs installed(this patch was made in 2002).I looked for the same patch that was compatible with my service pack/os, but it does not exist. Then theres 2 more alternatives to fix the problem. 1:Go into the advanced perfomance tab in my computer, and turn off the paging file.I did this and after my pc rebooted,I had all kinds of problems,my spysweeper came up telling me to reinstall it b/c the definitions were corrupted, and a couple other security programs said the same thing. So I turned the paging file back on,and now eveything seems to be working fine. I didn't even try Micrsoft's 2nd solution, I don't dare to.

    Your help is greatly appreciated,

lol, Mate I probably won't be a great help on this as I don't have the debugging tools installed to read the minidump files you have in the error report.

They aren't always that helpful anyway.

These sort of errors can be very difficult to diagnose and fix without the debugging resources available, and even then it's very hard and not very conclusive.

If you have XP and you haven't already done this then go to Start, then right-click My
Computer, Properties, Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery click Settings, then under System Failure uncheck "Automatically Restart".

That won't fix anything, but it will stop it from rebooting on every error and hopefully give you more details in the error messages.

Also, check Device Manager for any extra or double-listings or any errors.

Check the Event Viewer in Control Panel, Administrative Tools for any clues on the culprit.

Does it do this error in Safe Mode?

    Hello,
I did all that you suggested, and there werent any errors or doubles in the device manager, but I did see something in the event viewer that is strange. There is this reacurring error that happens every time my pc starts w/ this info.

Description:the mrtRate service failed to start due to the following error:The system cannot find the file specified.
    Source: Servic control manager

And I'm not sure if it does this in safe mode or not,b/c I'm never in it long enough for it to happen if it does.

I think I spend more time fixing my pc than anything else, that sux.

mrtRate is perhaps part of Quicken, do you or did you have that installed at one stage?

    Hey insomniac,
Yes,I did have it installed at one time, but my pc kept getting slower and slower due to other things, so I did a complete system restore and since then have not reinstalled it.

System Restore doesn't uninstall programs, did you mean you formatted and reinstalled Windows?

Anyway, for whatever reason, you have a Quicken service trying to start.

Go to Start, Run and type in services.msc and then O.K.

Look for any service/s listed there named Quicken and/or mrtRate and see what they are set to, ie Disabled, Manual or Automatic and post back with the details.

Also, do you have Quicken listed in Add/Remove, or in the Start Menu etc?

Do a search and see if anything Quicken is on your system.

    Hey,
Yes, I think thats what I ment.I did what is called a "destructive restore" where I guess it restores it back to the factory installed condition.

So I looked in the services the way you told me, and I didn't see quicken or the mrtRate in there.I did find Quicken in add/remove programs and in C:\program files\Quicken.Also, I tried to open Quicken, and It looks like it's just the trial version that is installed,I would have to install the entire version to use it permanatley.

    Hey,
I think I found the problem.I looked a little closer at the error report and found that it listed a FILNT.sys file in the report that comes from the software outpost firewall, which I have uninstalled.I looked at the outpost forums and found this Post:

    TITLE:3rd FILNT.SYS-BSOD ! That´s it for me

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I´ve just had my 3rd BSOD with XP since more than one year.
And all 3 were caused by Outpost (filnt.sys).

I liked it much, and the features are good.
But it is one thing if a firewall is not always protective (AKA as Outpost-localhost-bug)
and another thing if it makes a whole (well configured) system crash

I´m really sorry that I have to leave you, but I won´t install any software that is that unstable any longer.

And the (since eternity) promised V2, will it ever be released

Not even a bugfix/hotfix for this (obviously not so seldom) crash ?

    Sorry, but good bye

Thank you for helping me resolve this issue,

If I expierience any more crashes/error's Ill post back,
