error problem with windows

I am not very good with repairs on computers. So I need simple directions if possible

I got this new computer a few weeks ago. Windows xp home.

I keep getting this message whenever I try and use online streaming and windows media player and realplayer. Even if I try and watch a video on the news it always come up with this error message

Windown has encountered a problem and must shut down.

Is there anything I can do to fix this problem or do I have to take it back to the place where I purchased it from.

It's an error with a component of Internet Explorer.

You could try to repair IE, but be warned that IE errors can be the most annoying and difficult to fix.

First thing I would suggest is to visit the MalWare Forum, if you haven't already done so (follow the stickies), and rule out infection.

Yes I did already run and rule out infections

Seeing my computer is only a few weeks old, I guess I will take it back and see if they can repair it for me. I have no idea how to repair IE myself

Well we can try a few other things, I was just going by the most obvious.

Do you have a proper Windows CD?

If so, start, run and type in sfc /scannow (note space after sfc ).

If not, post back.

 

Thank you for trying to help me. I have no idea how to fix things when they happen. This morning I got an icon in my tool tray that told me to run chkdsk because there were problems. So I ran it and it said it fixed two corrupt and unreadable entrys. Now everything is working fine.

I have no idea what happened. But running chksdk fix the problem

I wish this icon would have come up long time ago.
