Error when shutting last windows explorer window

    Hi,

I've been through the malware process and am now clean.

My problem is that when closing the last window of "Windows Explorer" there is a crash - the "report" window comes up that sends info to Microsoft. Sometimes, the error is more serious - you can't access the desktop without going to the process explorer and killing the entire process tree for explorer. Usually, though, the screen just flashes a few times and you can then reopen Windows Explorer if necessary.

As long as you keep one window in explorer open, however, you can close other windows with no crash.

I am wondering if this is worth attempting a repair install. I am worried it is a sign of worse problems to come.

    This is XP Pro.

    Thanks.

    Hi

Any other info in the Windows Crash Report box that may hold clue as to what application or file failed?

Failing that if you go into the Event Viewer ( found in Admin Tools in Control Panel ) are there any errors from exactly the time you recieve these crashes? if you have please post the Log Name, Source, Event ID and whats in the General Box

    could look like this:

Also if you boot into Safe Mode and then do the same scenario of shutting down, do you get the same error/crash?

Here is the info, and I'm going to check safe mode now. Thanks.

Ok, I was unable to reproduce the error in safe mode.

Also, I should have mentioned this error appeared only after I had run the registry cleaner by "Eusing." This was before I knew about CC.

It found a boatload of issues, and I allowed it to correct all of them. After that, the error message came up whenever I would close windows explorer if and only if there was only one window open. At first, it was a DEP error, and I then disabled that service, at which point the error just turned into a general crash error (the one that lets you send info to Microsoft). I have since reenabled DEP, but the error message remains the generic one.

Anyway, I never got this error before Eusing. I did go through the malware check and followed all steps in your other forum on that. Definitely speeded up my startup but I still have this error.
