error when trying to run the Java updater

I'm getting an error when trying to run JavaRA to check for updates to Java.

I tried to download from the Java download site as there was an update and it wouldn't install. I disabled my Firewall and Antivirus and then it installed correctly. Now when I run JavaRa and check for updates again it gives me the second message and when I look further (top screen shot) I see this. So I disabled the firewall and AV again, but still get these messages. Any ideas what is causing this and how to fix it?

I have them most current version of Java as i had to manually download it from the website and then install it. The problem is when I try to check for updates whether using JavaRa or going to Control Panel\Java\updates tab I get those messages.

Would it make sense to uninstall everything Java and do a clean download of both last version of Java and JavaRa?

Uninstalling wasn't the best thing to try. I first tried to uninstall through windows add/remove and received a error (sorry I didn't write it down). I then tried Revo and it also encountered the same error when it used the software's uninstall process. it did let me continue to remove all registry entries pertaining to the uninstall. Funny thing is that when it was finished and after a reboot it appeared that it was gone, as it wasn't showing up in add/remove programs. I then tried to re-install current version and it kept giving me a message that I already have current version installed, do you want to reinstall y/n. Select yes and will not continue, just keeps on asking same thing.

Long story short, I ended up doing a system restore to a point just after I successfully updated to the current version of Java manually on the their website. But the update feature still doesn't work and gives me the same messages that I showed in my screen shots above.:confused

    Let's see if I understand.
You click the java icon in Control Panel and the update tab and you should see that Java is set to check for updates automatically. When you click the Update Now button, you get an error?

The title of my window says Java Control Panel not Update Checker as yours does.

JavaRa is a little program that you can use to remove older versions of java. It also has a feature amongst others to check for updates. When I select check for updates using Jucheck.exe it gives me those screen shot messages.

In addition: When I try to update via the java control panel and click on the "update now" selection it does the exact same thing as in JavaRa which are those messages I posted in my screen shots. I think both are using the same update checking program.

In case your not familiar with JavaRa here is a screen shot of what I'm talking about.

Currently I have the most recent version of java. I'm just a little perplexed as to why the check for updates is not working?

Sorry I didn't answer your questions directly. Yes, I get the error messages shown above when I click on "update now" in java control panel.

I use JavaRA but in this case, I'd rely on Java's own updater and not JavaRa's to check for updates. Why? Because Java is now owned by a different company (Oracle bought it from Sun) and has been updated. Perhaps JavaRA isn't set up yet to deal with the latest version.
This is all I could find http://raproducts.org/wordpress/
and it is set up for update 23, not 24 so maybe that is part of the problem.

Use Revo Uninstaller to remove EVERYTHING. If you are told to reboot, don't because Revo won't be finished. Revo uses the program's own uninstaller, which sometimes tells you to reboot. The 4th and final step in Revo is picking through the registry entries. If you reboot before Revo has a chance to finish, you really have not done a clean removal and will have problems.

After all the registry entries are gone, then install the latest version of Java and use Java's updater. If it still throws up an error, there might be pieces of a very old Java hidden somewhere.

Yesterday i tried uninstalling with Revo, but It ran into an issue when trying to uninstall using the program's uninstall portion. It did allow me to continue and remove all registry entries and initially looked like the uninstall was a success. I could no long see Java when viewing all programs in Revo or add/remove in windows. I did a re-boot and then tried dowloading using the Oracle site. After downloading and saving the setup program on my system I tried to run it and a message came up that stated I already have the current version of java, do you want to re-install (Y/N) When I selected yes, all it did was keep asking the same question over and over and would never install anything. I guess I could give it another go with Revo, but not sure that would accomplish anything different.

As I stated earlier, after unsuccessfully trying to uninstall/re-install, I did a system restore point after I originally downloaded and installed the current version manually on the Oracle site a few days ago. So at this point I have the current version of Java, but I just can't seem to check for any further updates by using the Java control panel or JavaRa. I did go the link you provided that will verify your version and it's current, so I may have to wait until the next update is available and try to download directly from the Oracle site and see what happens as there is no clue as to what is causing this error.

If that's the case maybe I should use the deepest scan option that Revo has. I used the medium scan or the one that's next in line from the safe mode. Other than that would that mean going in manually and deleting folders?

P.S. I did use JavaRa several times to remove old entries and the last log didn't show anything so I assume it removed everything.

Just ran JavaRa and checked for updates. I'm on v1.6_24 no errors etc- checking for an up date.
I think the Java updater is corrupted. Whether from Control Panel or JavaRa (option choosen in the screen shot) both use jucheck.exe
That's why the manual update worked.
Restored to a corrupted although updated Java.
Either undo restore or uninstall Java again. Get to this position as quoted by you.
Please follow the instructions in this link. Run the JavaMSIFix as per instructions, please.

    Cheers..

    Ok.

Uninstalled Java using Revo. As Revo was using the program's uninstall program this message popped up: "Internal error: 2753 Regutils.dll". It did allow me to continue and remove registry entries, which i did. I downloaded the fix you supplied in your link. I rebooted the computer and tried running the fix program and after clicking on "click to fix" I got this screen with unknown error #87. So I'm right back where I started from it would seem.

Looks to have issues with the uninstaller! Have you installed Java manually again? If yes..
Try this, Windows Installer CleanUp Utility 7.2
Then from Control Panel, Add/Remove/Change- uninstall Java. Do you still get the "Internal error: 2753 Regutils.dll" If yes, I'm lost but will research in to it. If not then- Re-ininstall Java.
    If you get the..
    Run the- JavaMSIFix
    Cheers..:)

No i haven't tried to reinstall Java, but I'll bet it will give me the same message that I already have the current version do you want to reinstall (Y/N) etc.. etc... etc.. I think there is something in the registry from an old install that is not getting deleted and signaling the install program that I already have it. Just my guess though.

I did some reading and see that this program can be risky to play with as it can do more harm than good and that is why Microsoft is not supporting it's use any longer.:confused

I use Erunt to back up my registry. As long as I have backups, I should be ok to run the Windows Installer cleanup utility without too much worry if something should get messed up wouldn't I?

Have to wait for a couple days as I'm going to be out of town.

Thanks for being patient with me and for giving me things to try. Really appreciate it:)

To use Windows Installer CleanUp Utility you would need to have Java on the Machine to start with, since were are concerned about it.
You are correct about it being a risky tool to run, but I've not seen any issues posted at least here on MG's. That's not to say its not risky. Having backed up with Erunt is always a good idea.
No harm in trying to install. Can you give us the exact error message you get when installing Java? I was hoping JavaMSIFix would fix the old remnants in the registry.
Out of ideas for now, hope some one more competent will jump in here.
    Cheers..

    Update:

I conversed with the author of JavaMSFIX and he suggested some things I could try. I explained that I could not run his program successfully and was getting an error. He suggested to just delete the entry (Java Runtime Environment) in the registry and try re-installing Java. I did that, but still got the error message about already having the current version. So... on a whim I ran his JavaMSFIX program again and bang !! it worked this time. I reinstalled the Current version of Java and everything is now ok. Not sure what the discrepancy is between deleting the registry entry manually and then running his program, but it worked none the less.

P.S. He also suggested I could try the Windows install cleanup utility if everything else failed.
