I run Nod32 as my AV program but I do not see it listed as one of your recommendations? What are your thoughts on it and on what is the best AV program? When I had a HDD data restored, my "computer guy" said it was the best, but that was several years ago and that advice may not have ever been true :) I now consider you guys my experts!!:-D

    Thanks for you thoughts.

Hello there. Everyone's opinion on the "best antivirus" are going to be different. It's almost impossible to say which is the best. In addition to using an anti virus, another layer of protection is the person using the computer ;) Surfing habits, what you download, and where from etc...

If you have used NOD32 for a while and like it, then continue to do so, I myself on the other hand use Avast Free Edition which I have used for a few years now since they made AVG rather resource heavy and in turn that caused me to make the switch.

Hi. As kestrel said, what is great is what works for you.

I actually do run NOD32 and like it a lot. I think it works great. I run Avira AV on my desktop which is free. I also really like that.

Some can run an AV without issues whe others can't stand it.

    Use what works. :)

I recommend ESET Nod32 to business customers because they can't run any of the free av programs. For home users I recommend the free ones you see mentioned here.

I had bad experiences with norton 2003 and Nod32 maybe 6 years ago, my computer was got infected while I was using these licensed antivirus software. However I purchased Norton at 2008 or 2009, i didnt have any problem with it. I dont purchase antivirus software anymore if i do i would buy sophos or F-secure or BitDefender. I lost my confidence with Nod32 and I think Norton or Mcafee use lots of system source.

There are great antivirus software for free, at the moment I am using Panda Cloud Free version, I am happy with it, AVG Free and AVAST are great too, once my computer got infected with an virus while ago maybe 10 years ago while I was using Avira so I lost my confidence on that too. I choose to use panda because it is very very light.

Thanks alot. Just wanting to make sure Im not hopelessly outdated in my info & knowledge. Do you feel the free programs are just as good or better than the pay programs like ESET?

Yes I can definitely say some of the free antivirus software are good as the paid ones. AVG, Avast and Avira, Panda Cloud these are the most stable and trustable ones. Even the virus bulletin tests prove this. I use free antivirus and also I use a free firewall (comodo) I didnt have any problems, time to time I scan my computer with different antivirus brands via their online scanner tools to be sure my computer is safe and they cant find anything too ;)

I generally look at the overhead of the AV program. Norton and McAfee and even AVG have very high overhead in my opinion. Most of the free ones use more resources on the computer, probably because they need to manage the ads that are associated with them.

My experience finds Nod32 to be a very low overhead AV program. I have it on a little over 30 computers, some business and some private, and have never experienced an issue.

From what I have seen, here and there, Avira is usually listed as being the lowest in
resource use among the free choices, with Avast! being a close second.
