I get this after every startup, with the number at the end (in the case, #16) increasing by 1 each time. In Device Manager, there's always only one instance of the ethernet controller present with the corresponding number. I connect to the internet via wireless. Any idea what's causing this?

Not sure what is causing this but you can try the following. Create a restore point first. Also create a System Repair Disk.

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/5409/create-a-system-repair-disc-in-windows-7/

Download the ethernet file here. V 1.0.0.22 32 Unzip the file to a folder on your desktop in an admin account. It will have two inf files. One for 32bit called netL1e86.inf and one for 64bit called netL1e64.inf.

Right click the device select properties and under the driver tab select update driver. Then browse to the folder with the inf files and select the inf file that is for your OS, 32bit or 64bit.
