Hi I am new to this site. I am by no means a geek when it comes to computers so I do not know all the required "computer lingo". I reformatted my computer and now I cannot connect to the internet. Tnhe ethernet driver seems to be faulty and I am unable to fix this problem. Since I cannot connect to internet I cannot download any solutions either. I have re install Windows XP and the problem persists. Any suggestions please on how to get ethernet adaptor fixed so I can get linked to internet. Think it is 1394 Net adaptor- HP Pavilion 7920 hard drive.
    Thank you

    Try this:
Goto Start, right click on My Computer, choose Properties, click the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
Click the plus sign in front of Network Adapters, right click on the one with the problem, choose uninstall, click OK, and then re-start your PC

Thanks for your reply. I have done this. There is no plus sign next to network adaptors but a yellow question mark. I have uninstalled it and restarted my computer but it just re appears with the yellow question mark when it comes on again. The device is not working properly and is recorded as such in device manager. Any further advise please????

Post the model # (Your full model #, it should be on the front if a desktop and on a tag somewhere if a laptop)
Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers. Upload the report as an attachment

    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181

Click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware-related Pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit.

I'm sorry but I cannot get past step 1 of your suggestion: I cannot find the link "report" on the everest page.
I click on the web link you gave and it takes me to a different page on the geek website which has lava something info on it with a free edition of everest (which is not for free any more I think).
I can't see the "report" link at the top of the page.
Please also remember I am on the internet on another computer- the one I'm experiencing problems with cannot connect at all to the internet so I can't do a system report via internet on that desktop ie it is a HP Pavilion 7920.
    thanks

Ignore that last post. LOL I was editing it and the site went haywire on me.
I can't find any reference to a network (ethernet) driver anywhere for your PC. There is nothing described in the specs at HP about network hardware for it. Has a network card been installed? How are you (or how did) you get online with it before? Dial-up? Cable? DSL? I will need that report to find out what the device is.
    Click this link:
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181

Look at the thumbnail in my last post and you will see the download links circled.
Download the file, copy it to a CD (or floppy, if both PC's are equipped for that) and transfer it to your HP. Install and run it. When it is done scanning, do this:
Now copy the report text file to another CD / floppy and transfer that to the PC you are online with. Get to this thread and do this:

    Hi me again- thank you!
I did all you said and have attached the report hereto- well at least I hope it is attached!!!!!!
Does it make any sense to you???
I've never used the desktop previously- got it from a friend, formatted all and installed windows xp on it from scrath- never been able to link to internet. my internet connection is dsl broadband. HP Pavilion 7920 hard drive, windows xp loaded and there is definately no problem with internet connection/ cable since i use the same cable in laptop chatting to you now.

When i set up internet on laptop I simply plugged in telephone cable into laptop and connection set up ie all settings etc were there instantly. But with the "new" desktop this did not happen. Then I called our service provider namely AT & T to get settings and they tried to help but established the ethernet adaptor was faulty and suggested I cantact HP- which I did- they recon they cannot help since the computer is too old and they have no service/ assistance etc etc listed any more for this computer. The hard drive does not look sooo old though and is in very good condition. I cant understand how HP can discard it like this. It has a Windows 2000 Professional sticker on it so I presume this is about the age of the hard drive. Thanks for all your trouble. Let me know if this makes any sens to you. Regards
    K

I found drivers for you, but don't know if they are any good. I downloaded them and got an error message when trying to see if the setup would start. It may be because I don't have that ethernet controller. There are two of them for that model and we may have to try both of them.
    Here is the link:
    http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1190&SubCatID=127

I would download the ver.6.0 first.
Unzip the file and you should see what is in the first thumbnail.
Double-click on the Vista_XP_........._98SE file. That will open open two more files.
Double-click the X86 file. That opens more files.
Double-click the WinSetup.exe file. That should? start the install.
I attached a thumbnail to help walk you through.

If you don't have an app, use 7-Zip. That's an good, easy one to use.
