    Hi all,

This is my first post on majorgeeks. I searched through the archives and found some stuff pertaining to problems with ethernet.exe, but either the solutions didn't pertain to my issue or didn't fix the problem.

I run Spybot - Search & Destroy, AVG Anti-Spyware, AdAware, and CWShredder in Safe Mode on a regular basis; none of them come up with anything, but in regular Windows XP shell Spybot will detect 'ethernet.exe' over and over and repeatedly try to remove it.

I've attached a copy of a HijackThis log to see what needs to be done. If you all notice some other stuff that needs removing, please let me know about it as well. I use my computer as the centerpiece of my recording studio need it in top condition.

    Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

You have a bunch of problems and need to do the below so we can find and remove all malware. HJT does not even scratch the surface in showing what could be hiding on your PC.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Oh, I almost forgot: as far as the results of running the tutorial:

-There were a couple of programs I removed with Add/Remove programs (like Viewpoint Media Player) by following the list here in MajorGeeks of malware programs.

-AVG and Spybot S&D found quite a bit of malware that they removed.

-The online scans found several viruses that could not be removed.

    Thanks again.

Let's remove a bunch of services. Some malware and some for software that you no longer have installed (Symantec).
    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to icrss manager 32bit
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Now repeat the above to Stop and Disable the below two Services (if you do not find them or get any errors, just continue):
      • Symantec Lic NetConnect service
      • Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler
      • LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation
      • DisplayController
      • EthernetController
      • Windows explorer
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/paste icrss into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now repeat the above to delete the below two Services (if you do not find them or get any errors, just continue):
      • CLTNetCnService
      • Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler
      • LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation
      • DisplayController
      • EthernetController
      • Windows explorer
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.
    Now uninstall the below software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    LiveUpdate 3.1 (Symantec Corporation)

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Hey,

I've attached the 3 logs you requested. Everything seems to be running better now. Some of the services couldn't be found/deleted by HijackThis; otherwise, no real problems carrying out any of the steps. One problem I've been having for a long time is getting a lot of Page Not Found/404 errors in both IE and Mozilla (regardless of which one I run) and having to reload a page several times to get it to show up, along with there being a lot of missing images on webpages. So, I'm hoping this will clear all of that up as well. Let me know how the logs look. Thanks again so much for your help!

Your logs are clean but you ran the wrong version of HJT this time and you have it installed improperly and not renamed. HJT should never be installed on your Desktop nor be installed in any subfolder of Documents and Settings. In your earlier log you had it correct and you also had the 1.99.1 version that we recommended.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Ever since I ran avenger, I'm getting an error code popping up when I first boot up my computer which reads that winlogon.exe cannot be found (just before the list of accounts appears). What's this all about?

  11. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

It's not due to Avenger. The only items Avenger actually found to delete are these:
And if winlogon.exe were missing you would not be able to run Windows properly.

Take a look to see if you see the below file:
    C:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe

It showed in your newfiles.txt log attached in message number 7:
    Code:

    ============= Finding copies of winlogon.exe =================================
    "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winlogon.exe" 516608 07/16/2003 03:51 PM
    "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE\winlogon.exe" 516608 07/16/2003 03:51 PM

The file does exist. So why do I get the seemingly arbitrary error code?

  13. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Not sure. It is possible that malware is trying to run a non-valid copy of winlogon.exe that does not exist, but your logs were clean.

Download the attached file and extract the contents into your c:\windows\system32 folder. Then reboot. Do you still get the same error? If so, continue on with the below.

What is the exact word for work error message?
Also attach new logs from GetRunKey, ShowNew, and HJT.
