ethernet problems

    I would like a little bit of assistance please

    i bought a new router and when i came to install it i have a problem.
    i put the disk in it first explains you must power it up then says connect to your server then connect your PC to the router with Ethernet cable ( i have done it before without problems) it then starts to search for the MAC number and the IP address i then get a message to say that the PC is not connected so i switch to another Ethernet cable with the same result i have tried 5 different cables and always the same.

    what i hope someone can tell me is before i go to the repair shop is there anyway i could have accidentally have switched off or blocked my Ethernet connection on the PC.

    any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated thanks BILL

    Hi Bill

    What router you have?

    Which OS is this on?

    Is the network icon in the system tray have a red X on it or just shows the monitor screens? if a red X open Networking up and enable the port.

    If you have a software firewall check to see if its blocking the connection to the router as many will as they think its a new connection, could turn off the firewall until your router is sucessfully setup.

    Thanks for the advise H, the router is D-Link DIR-635 the OS is XP home i use Zone alarm pro with Nod 32 so that may be the culprit and yes i do have a connection for the moment but i am using my old router D-Link DWL-G700 this works well but i am trying to improve the reception around the house (not for long i have bought an apartment it's new and will be ready in June/July so it is not deadly urgent.
