Event Viewer Problem....

Vista Home Premium X64 - when I go to look at the event log for "System", I get an error (see screen shot attached). I checked the Event Log Service and it is set to Automatic and running; the Event Collector Service is set to Manual, but I started it and still get the error. The other event logs in the Event Viewer work fine (Setup, Application, etc). I'm still researching this with MSKB, but I was hoping one of the MG resident geniuses was familiar with this problem.

(one other thing - the time/date was WAY off; it was set to 11:10am Nov 16 2001 when the actual time/date was 1:28pm Aug 19 2011 :banghead )

 

I found a "Hotfix" at the MSKB, but it keeps saying "an unexpected error has occured" and I can't download it.... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972999

I also followed the steps in this article, but when I try to open the saved log, I get the exact same error that is attached above.

I was able to download the hotfix for 64bit. Find it attached. Hope it helps.

 

Thanks tgell, but I got the error fixed, and the Event Viewer is now generating a new System log, but I wanted to view the corrupt log. The client says she's having problems with the laptop (it cuts out to a black screen and reboots w/o warning), and I've been running it almost non-stop for about 2 days and I haven't had a single problem with it. I've run stress tests to try to induce a thermal crash, that didn't work; the PC ran fine all the way thru. I've run HD and RAM diags, everything is 100%. I was hoping the Event Viewer would have some clues, but the log from the time of the "crash" is corrupt and unreadable. I did manage to open it w/ Notepad, but it's a jumbled mess and just nonsense for the most part.....
