I've been out of the forums here for a little while, which I regret. I love the community and support here so kudos to all of you. I recently have fallen in love with EMS and in the past couple days I think I over did it just a little. I go to nursing school full time with taking programming on the side, work about 25 hours a week and do anywhere between 40 and 80 hours a week in EMS. Little back story to update you all I graduated high school this past spring (yay class of 08) and I started volunteering at my local ambulance squad just to see what it was like and boy I almost regret it because im so addicted but I love it so much. I got my EMT cert over this past summer and its partly what got me to go to nursing school because I never had considered anything in health care before. So long story short yes we have bad calls here and there but NOTHING like the past 36 hours.

Oct 31st 12:50pm dispatched for a MVC with rollover (3 out of 4 didn't make it)

After pulling some duty I decided to go home at midnight like I normally do then as soon as I get home I hear tones for a MVC and I consider going then it said reported with 3 ejections so I start booking it to my car. I'm the newest EMT yet they gave me the worst patient to treat, badly injured and extremely combative, we flew him out and no word yet from the hospital on his condistion and we lifted two others but they were alert and oriented.

Cleaning up the ambulances after the call we hear a report for a house fire at 1:11am reported fully involved, and oh yes it was burnt down to the ground and it was a nice house too. Thankfully no one was living in it and no one was hurt or killed, but we had to be there till 6am then we were released.

Next I go straight to work and work for a good 8 hours then am leaving and as I pass the hall tones go out for a nursing home medical emergency so im like crap and go on the call and on our way back from the hospital we got called there again for the same thing Lol, and here I am now just getting home at 12:01 November 2nd.

I realize this kinda turned into a vent, but I was probably gonna explode if I didn't let all this out im so tired right now, im tuning off my pager for the next few days.

Support your local EMS volunteers! We are a dying breed and here are some links to pictures and articles.

Hey cheers for the update on what your upto Pleeb, wow busy is an under exageration!!!

You have picked a very hard type of working career, but also a very rewarding one too, so wishing you great sucess in this career, agreed support your local services as you'd never wish them to disapear, especially if the need arised that you needed their services!

Very likely as your in nursing school that this volunteer work will assist you in hands on training and that is invaluable, I never thought I would end up in medicine myself after many years in the digital photofinishing area, but I wanted a career change and ended up in medical research, hard work and while most of my work is working on research projects I due to my training have been dealing with patients in a clinic, so great to speak to them, help them if we can and just give something back, like you I'm enjoying my time in medicine, but as you say its hard work and can be very long hours.

So good lukc to you and do stop by the forum when you get a chance.

Wow some night. I volunteered for about five years when I was still living in South Africa mainly on Friday and Saturday nights so it was mainly stabbings and kids wrapping their cars around poles. There is no real words to describe how one feels at the end of a long shift. Keep up the good work.

Hey Pleeb. Congrats on finishing high school and the E.M.S. course. Yep, it's a pretty stressful area, as you no doubt know by now.

Did a stint at nursing back in mid-eighties, (Psychiatric, lol!), which has its own high stress level, and had nothing to do with being a Chemist, (my usual profession). It's pretty rewarding, but it was also nice when it was all over in some ways, I'll admit.

Good luck with your future endeavours, Pleeb. ;)

Good luck, my mother's been a nurse for 40 years now or so and she's a very caring person, which seems to be an overarching theme for all those in the profession.
