Lavalys announced today (5-12-2005) that it's discontinuing the freeware market by halting the development of its EVEREST Home Edition (the successor of AIDA32) system diagnosis product.

What a shame, it's one of my favourites!

    That bites.
Any other free alternatives (that are regularly updated)?

There are quiet a few available HERE.

Only other one I have used is Belarc Advisor, but it wasn't as detailed or as thorough as Everest.

I really hate companies that capture market share by offering freeware, then turn around and only offer shareware.

I realise they have to make money, but there are other ways like ad supported etc.

Companies like ZoneLabs and Google have proven that it's feasible.

You could see it coming, they've been deleting features from the free version for a while. I haven't been updating it anyway, because of the aformentioned feature shrinkage. As long as I'm using this old computer, my old Everest version is good enough. If I get new hardware that's not compatible with my outdated Everest, I'll just have to get something else.

They did the exact same thing with Aida32, so I really shouldn't be surprised.

More disappointed than anything really. :(
