Windows ME: All the simple tasks, from minimizing a page to closing one, have slowed to a crawl! I've run spybot, ad-aware, spy blaster, reg clnr, & everything comes back clean. Ran scan disk & defrag with no improvement.
Running anti-vir & sygate, explorer, avg ctrl, exec, & win mgmt.
Yes, it's dial-up, but I've never had these problems before (which don't depend on a
    s-l-o-w connection anyway.)
    PLEASE help....
Any & all suggestions most appreciated:)

Have you tried opening Task Manager and seeing how many applications are running and the amount of resources that they are using?:)

Please explain how to get to Task Mgr

    No "processes" to go to.
Programs listed in window: Juno, SMC(not responding), x1exec, Avg ctrl, Exec,
    Systray, Explorer, & Win mgmt
(x1exec is an accelerator program from Juno)
I guess that would be 7

No processes ? should be a tab in window next to applications.

did you right click my computer, then click properties then performance, system resources should at least be in the high 70's, and a really clean running system will be in the 90's. If resources are low, go to start, run, type msconfig, hit OK and go to startup and see what all is running, you can probably uncheck most of them, but make sure the ones related to anti virus and firewall are checked. And make sure that you DO NOT uncheck the necessary ones, I believe they are system tray, scan registry, state manager, and task monitor. Play it safe at first and shut down the stuff you don't need and see if it helps. You'll have to restart your pc after you uncheck them, when it does, go back and recheck the system resources and see what you have now, and how it runs. Good luck. I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as many of these people, so maybe I'm off base here, but it won't hurt to try this.

System resource at 67%. "System configured for max perf."

67% isn't really that bad, I don't think it would be a problem, but I think I'd still try shutting a few things down in startup and see if it helps.

are you running 2 antivirus programs? From your first post it looks like you are running avg and antivir. You should only be running one on your computer, otherwise the programs conflict with each other.

    avg ctrl is Sygate system.

Start Up items checked: Juno, Task Monitor, Sys Tray, State Mgr, Load Pwr Profile, Scan Registry, Smc Svc (sygate), avg ctrl, KB891711, KB918547, Scheduling Agent.

Smc Svc appears 2x: loaded from Reg (Machine Run)
    " " " (Machine Svc)

Do any of the above need to be unchecked?

I have the older CCleaner v 1.17.090 & use it before every shutdown. Do I need the latest version?

TY all for the help to date.....:)

I would follow these instructions (where applicable) to tweak your system for performance. This covers every software tweak I can think of so if you are not satisfied after doing that, then consider a harware upgrade (typically RAM and/or CPU), or follow the instructions in the Overclocking Guide.

majinbuu brings up a good point as well

This makes it look like you have AVG and Antivir running. I've used Sygate Personal Firewall for quite some time (still do), and I've NEVER seen AVG as part of it. AVG is an antivirus app. You should only have one antivirus program (or firewall for that matter) installed on your system, or you will experience the symptoms you are describing here.

Start Up tab: avgctrl shows as Anti Vir in description.
So, are you saying I don't need both AntiVir & Sygate programs?

No, its good to have 1 antivirus application and 1 firewall, but no more of either. If avgctrl really is part of antivir, then you're good. Its just an odd coincidence that AVG antivirus has 3 running processes after a default install, all starting with AVG.
