Seems in the "old days", one pretty much just needed the combo of a decent FW and AV to stay relatively secure online (and of course I have "forever" had SpywareBlaster riding along -- for several reasons). You were considered in-the-know if ya had a layered approach to security - software protection programs from several different companies

Nowadays what should I change (add), and in what order of importance? A VPN, and how does a program such as OpenDNS work/integrate with it? Surely I need my Password Manager (I have two actually)? What about secure email? Surely some sort of an Anti-Malware program? What about any of the various browser protectors?

Sure wish I understood more rather than constantly feeling as if I'm falling behind (which I am).

Here are some of the most important things you can do to protect yourself and your data online:
    • Use strong and unique passwords for each of your online accounts. You can use a password manager to help you create and remember them. Password managers: using browsers and apps to safely store your passwords1
    • Use a VPN when you connect to public Wi-Fi networks. A VPN encrypts your data and hides your IP address from potential hackers. What is a VPN and why do you need one?2
    • Update your software and apps regularly. Software updates often contain security patches that fix vulnerabilities and bugs. Top tips for staying secure online3
    • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) for your online accounts. MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring something you know (such as a password) and something you have (such as a code sent to your phone) to log in. How to set up two-factor authentication on all your online accounts4
    • Be careful of phishing and scam emails. Phishing emails are designed to trick you into clicking on malicious links or attachments, or giving away your personal information. Don’t open or reply to emails from unknown senders, and always check the sender’s address and the URL of any links before clicking. How to spot and avoid phishing scams
    • Use a secure email service that encrypts your messages and protects your privacy. Some examples of secure email services are ProtonMail, Tutanota, and Mailfence. How to choose a secure email service
    • Use an anti-malware program to scan your devices and remove any threats. Anti-malware programs can detect and block malware such as viruses, ransomware, spyware, and adware. Some examples of anti-malware programs are Kaspersky, Bitdefender, and Malwarebytes. The best antivirus software for 2021
    • Use a browser protector to block malicious websites, ads, and trackers. Browser protectors can also warn you of phishing and scam sites, and help you manage your online privacy. Some examples of browser protectors are uBlock Origin, HTTPS Everywhere, and Privacy Badger. The best browser extensions that protect your privacy
