Anyone else a little shocked at this review

I was directed to this product from most of the people here and I use the paid version and it has done nothing but wonders to be honest, it's kept me clean and got rid of a few nasty things alone the way. Maybe I'm missing something here but for some reason I can't help to think the reviews that come out of that site are a bit biased if you ask me.

If it's not Spy Sweeper or SpyDoctor (taking nothing away from those 2 cause they are fine programs) then most of the reviews go no further than 3 stars. Which also makes me wonder, suppose they are right and Ewido really is that bad, what does that say for what basically has been called one of the best trojan removers to date and where did it go wrong.

I remember not to long ago it was getting alot of praise and was shaping up to be a pretty good contender alongside the other front runners. I'm not really mad to be quite frank, rather just really disappointed, if what they say is actually true and it's not as good as once thought then that's a huge blow.

I have Spy Sweeper on my other PC, I don't really like some of the things with it, it's got some annoying features, 1 being after updating the browser will pop up onto their site, which is annoying and the SpySweeperUpdater constantly opening and closing cause the hour glass to go nuts in a period of every 5-10 seconds...

Even so, my Ewido pay period ends in 160 days, if no new version or no improvements then thinking maybe I should use something else.

    Thoughts?

Not really, these products tend to fluctuate with time. Ad-Aware was the devil a while beck because of slow updates, so everyone said spybot rules. Now, spybot updates only on fridays (like malware only arrives every friday) yet no one complains about that. SpySweeper, however has been a consistent runner for years now. Maybe the magazine cant find a way to make money with Ewido.

I agree with the Major, that the quality of these types of software products tend to fluctuate with time.

Additionally, I wouldn't count on anything reviewed by PC Magazine for "objective" criticism and in-depth analysis of gotchas and warnings, as well as the good stuff. Their reviews are appallingly bias in that they always appear to over-praise products which they "happen to" advertise; regardless of how well they perform.

Before the tech boom went bust; PC Magazine used to be a pretty good resource for computer-related products and topics. However more recently the magazine has gone way downhill and it seems (at least to me) that PC Magazine invariably sucks up to the advertisers as well as the large technology companies.

My advice to anyone seeking reliable reviews of any PC related products or services; is to always use a search engine to check as many ‘trustworthy’ sources as possible (including typing in the full product name and the word "review" and/or "problems" in a reliable search engine).

Relying on any single source to ‘objectively’ review any product be it hardware, software, web-based resources, etc. is a prescription for failure, in my opinion.

    Good Luck!

Anyone happen to know which anti-spyware product actually scores the highest?

Spyware Doctor and Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor scored the highest, though even then, I don't like either of them. Spy Sweeper is a resource hog and Spyware Doctor used to never catch or remove anything in previous versions.

I agree with COMPUABLE. I have been using Ewido for a couple of years and have had a clean system the whole time I have had it on my PC.

Take tests done by PC Magazine with a grain of salt.

In the freeware category; I’d say that the two anti-spyware products; Spybot and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE Personal, are usually most often named the highest rated.

As for shareware products; PC Tools Spyware Doctor, Webroot Spy Sweeper and Sunbelt CounterSpy are almost always listed in the top five on most sites that rate such anti-virus products. More recently a lot of people in various forums report that they like Sunbelt CounterSpy because it comes with a 30-day trial which; unlike Spyware Doctor, actually scans for and removes malware during the trial; and the yearly subscription fee (for CounterSpy) costs less that Spy Sweeper or Spyware Doctor.

    Good Luck!

Several years ago, there was an unintentionally hilarious "schoolgirl-crush" interview of Michael Dell written by the editor-in-chief of PC Magazine Michael J. Miller. The magazine had been promoting this piece for months prior to its appearance; as a "hard hitting" interview with the Dell founder...

I'd certainly be hard pressed to find a more outrageously obvious butt-kissing love-fest of an "interview" done by any PC related magazine. The questions were like: "Gee Mr. Dell, your products are so gosh darned popular; how do you think you can sell even MORE computers?" <lol>

After I read the "interview" I offered to donate 5 PowerBooks (that our offices no longer used), to the charity of their choice if anyone at PC Mag or members in their forum could come up with just ONE single link to any PC Magazine article - in the entire history of PC Mag DELL related reviews - which was even mildly dissatisfied with; or which offered an ‘outright’ negative review to any Dell service, support, products, etc.

There were no takers, of course… lol. (I donated the PowerBooks locally anyway).

Additionally, I wrote to the editor-in-chief of PC Magazine Michael J. Miller; and asked why, even in the face of numerous web-wide complaints, there was absolutely no mention made of Dell's infamous lousy and overpriced so-called "paid support" or the outsourcing of Dell support to ‘slave-wage-allowing/hugging’ countries, and there was never a single criticism of Dell in any PC Magazine articles up to that point…

    Mr. Miller’s response:

"In the interview, I was trying to talk technology, as that is the top reason people read our magazine. But I agree it would have been good to talk about support if I had more time. I have seen a lot more complaints about Dell support lately -- it will be interesting to see if things change in this year's support survey.

And yes, as people have noted here, Dell did very well in last year's survey, despite the complaints I hear. And, yes, it's a relative scale. I'm not sure any PC vendor's support is really as good as it should be."
