    Dear Majorgeeks,
Overnight my acer tm4500li laptop xp pro has no connectivity, excellent signal strength. It worked fine last night in a restaurant 200 miles away. I use a net gear usb wifi adapter. I have Avast, Defender, Zone Alarm, sys. restore is off. There have been no other changes. The net gear adapter is enabled in device mgr. Thank you very much for your help, in advance.

Open a dos window and type "ipconfig /flushdns" then type "ipconfig /all" it looks like your not getting a proper ip address as it starts with 169 most routers hand out ip addresses with 198 addresses. try that to try flushout your dns cache. also why are you not using dhcp, that is where you assigned an address from the router

if you need help setting your system to accept dhcp addresses i can help you do that. but first check the settings in the router and turn dhcp on there, or make sure it is on. windows by default will install your network settings to work with dhcp, so if you haven't changed you windows settings it should not be an issue.

first check the settings for your router and see if it is set to hand out addresses if not then change it to hand them out by turning dhcp on. then see if it works. if not let me know and we can go from there. we can tackle this issue one step at a time

what you can do is a print screen and then paste it into paint. if you do that then i can try help figure out what to do next. upload the file to here so i can see it. or you can type the results into a text document and upload it here.

or you can copy and paste it here from the window. like so
    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>ipconfig

    Windows IP Configuration

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : gateway.2wire.net
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.100.105
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.100.254

    C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>

to do this you open the window and run ipconfig. then you click on the little c:\ in the tittle bar for the dos window. then go to edit. one of the commands is select all. then you can copy the text by hitting enter or going back to the c:\ edit copy that will allow you then paste the text in your reply.

Ok that is exactly what we need to get this working. It looks like you have alot of connections that you don't need. So we can try the easy fix first. disconnect your wirless connection, then delete all your wireless connections in your network connections folder. then reconnect your wireless and see if that works. if not post the results again from ipconfig.

    we will get this fixed

ok, what we are going to try now is going to internet options/connections and deleting all the wireless connections there. i think it has own tab. sure you turn off your wireless adapter and unplug your usb connector before your delete your connections. after that just plug in your usb connection leave your builtin adapter off and try to create a new connection. if that does not work post your ipconfig results here.

yes you are. you need to find the window for wireless connections. if it is not there, it will be a seperate tab, then it it is in the properties of the wireless connections. sorry i am not sure but deal with these issues not very often

The tab you need to look for is in the properties of the wireless card in device manager. go in there and delete all the connections found there. then try to connect using your usb connecter with the wireless card turned off

if you go the properties tab of the wireless card you will see 3 tabs, properties wireless conections and advanced. go to the wireless connections of the card and delete all the connections you find

I have found with my usb adapter that using windows wireless config tool works better for me then the software that installs with the adapter.
