    Hi,

I hope that title got your attention....I went out of town and left the kids and wife in charge of the computer....ouch...say no more....

Anyways, now when I open Iexplorer in XP Home edition with my admin account I cannot perform 2 tasks.

    (1) In Iexplore version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2., If I click on tools, internet options, i recieve the message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". Now the internet options are available to me from the control panel. (Update: I tried resseting the internet options too...still did not work).

    (2) If I try to log in to my office's Outlook web access internet page, it hangs....But if I use my wife's account it works....I think it may be a similar problem.

    (3) When I run outlook xp It hangs and then I use the task manager to end it. The next time, I get a message "Outlook failed to start correctly the last time. Starting outlook in safe mode will help you correct or isolate the problem in order sucessfully start the program. Some functonality may be disabled in this mode." So I click yes and it runs in safe mode, but I do not know where to fix that problem....
(Small update: After running it in safe mode, I can get my email. Then I close outlook, and reopen it. It runs and hangs again. But if I do not end the process, it eventually (2-3 minutes) starts working. Now I do not have auto synchronization (I have to use F5) so it is not synching when it loads).

All of this happened at the same time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

Ok, for the first problem, check here in the registry (regedit):

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions

Look to the right for nobrowseroptions and remove it after backing up the key.

Or if you want to keep it, 0 disables the restriction.

As for the second problem....got me. Corrupt user account?

I found the first key and changed the value from 1 to 0. Then I was able to access the tools-internet options within internet explorer. The second key does not exist. I am still have extremely slow outlook web access and outlook.

    Thanks!

Have you configured the service Protected Storage to start manual ? (If so set it to automatic)

Have you uinstalled MSN Messenger ? (If so configure Outlook to stop loading MSN Messenger at startup, as it will fail)

I looked in the services and found 'Protected Storage', It was set to Automatic but was not started.

When I tried to start the service, the error message 'Could not start the Protected Storage service on the local computer. Error 193:0xc1.

The system event view said 'The Protected Storage service terminated with the following error: Protected Storage is not a valid Win32 application.'

    Thanks,
    Any other ideas?

Strange thing with Protected Storage service, maybe try to run this command (Will check if any of the system files are corrupt):

Last time I saw that restriction show up with no cause, there was a torjan on the system.

Your last error makes me wonder too...

I did suspect that and ran Uncle Norton .... nothing came up! But I'll try that anti virus too

Cripes man if you have a trojan infection, you can't remove it with a virus program.Trojan's and virus's are two different animals.
Do a Trojan scan with a trojan program.Use this one from MajorGeeks fabulous program site.

    Er, what?

    What AV do you use?

Norton may not remove trojans, but others do.

I know my Panda Titanium does....

Well, I'm running the Housecall antivirus software, I'll try the trojan software next....OK...Ok...don't panic

Thanks for the great help (so far!)....
    tls1

Ok...the Housecall found 2 trojans but they were dormant (not running)..I don't think they are the cause of my problem but I cleaned em up anyways. I then downloaded trojan remover....it found nothing.

I even tried a system retore (earlier today) to a date prior to the problem and it indicated that there were no changes...

    Any other ideas?
    Thanks!

    Protected storage uses lsass.exe

If that is broken, well thats bad.

Let me see what else I can dig up.

Did you do an SFC as listed above?

    Another possibility.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider

See the numbered folder below it?

Back it up, then right click, go to permissions. Give administrators full control. Now nuke it.

    Reboot.

Can you start the service now?

Lesson learned: don't give anyone who knows less about computers than you admin access, unless they could potentially punish/hurt you for it.

I'm running SFC now, we'll see what it comes up with....
Keep in mind that I solved the tools-internet options within iexplore. The last problem is that outlook app and outlook web access is VERY slow to start. Several minutes for each.

    Thanks!

    reinstall

Back up or restore point if you can. Or
Go to My Computer, Control Panel,Add/Remove Programs, uninstall the bad programs
    reboot.
    www.microsoft.com
download what you need, config them the way you want them to run!

Thanks for the great help. SFC came to the rescue and solved the problems. I can now use OWA and outlook. I do not know exactly what went wrong but it now works.
