Something really weird is going on in my comp. I normally use firefox but today i used internet explorer to access some sites. And then onwards my comps behaving unusual.

Whenever I click on an exe file, instead of running it gives me and error "error launching installer" with the title showing "nsis error"....

I know there is some malware because whenever I clicked on 'my computer' it didnt open and instead there was some activity on the net. So i simply took out the net cable. Immediately "my computer" opened with the error something like -connection not available and gave me two choices - retry & work offline.

Now whenever I click on an exe file (in 90% cases) I get this error and a duplicate exe file is created in the same folder. The name is also same except that it ends in "~" symbol. (It is difficuilt to search for that symbol in google also)

Then all the codecs got corrupted or something. the pdf files and video files have become 'unrecognised format'. My comp was getting real slow.

So I formated the partition and reinstalled xp but still the error is there on all drives.

    Plzz help.....

oh yes...regarding that duplicate exe file, it has about 100 kb lesser than that installer file and this works fine if used. but my comp is still slow.....

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

If you formatted and reinstalled, the problems should be gone!

Do you have more than one partition? What is on the other partitions?

It is actually better to delete partitions, recreate them, format and them reinstall. But whatever media you reinstall from better be malware free. If it is not an original CD from Microsoft it could well be infected and could just recreate all your problems.

Proper procedures must be followed in order for us to help you! Here they are:

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
