.exe files won't run

Hi, I run Windows XP on my desktop. Several weeks ago, SUPERAntiSpyware removed some malware and since, all of the shortcuts to .exe files on my desktop and start menu are broken. This was sufficient for what I use this particular machine for for a while, but I recently decided to upgrade to Windows 7. I seem to be unable to boot from the DVD drive, and Windows claims that it doesn't know how to open setup.exe. Possibly (un)related, Windows has also been attempting to install an update and failing at each shutdown for approximately the same time. I would just like to install Windows 7 and be done with this, and any help would be appreciated. Thank you,

    Stogie
