    I lost helpctr.exe - thru a lot of looking, I found HELPCTR.EX_ in the i386 folder

I think I need to expand HELPCTR.EX_ to recover helpctr.exe.

So far, I cannot find a tool to expand the EX_ file.

Anyone know how to expand this file?

This assumes that the location of the file you found is in C:\i386

Go to start/run and type or paste this in the box
    Code:
    expand c:\I386\helpctr.ex_ c:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\helpctr.exe

That expanded the helpctr.exe but trying to use help from the start button, I get an error saying to start service "help and Support"

Any ideas how to do that?

    There is also a HELPHOST.EX_ and a HELPSVC.EX_ in i386

    Within c:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries
    there is a helpsvc.exe, but no helphost.exe.

Do you think I should expand HELPHOST.EX_

if you go in to control panel double click on administrative tools, then click on services.in the next menu scroll down and find help and support double click on it make sure it is set to automatic and hit the start tab then press apply.

I have been thru every menu in Ctl Panels - Adm Tools and there is no help and support service listed.

Did you run Easy Cleaner? Apparently this, and some other cleaners have in the past, removed Help and Support Services.
See if this registry fix restores it
    Code:

I have rebuilt using my Windows xp disk - thanks to everyone who has responded

I don't use Easy Cleaner, but I will keep your web address handy in case this happens again
