I accidentally removed my explorer bar / start button using audio winbench 99 1.0.1. The program downloads as au9911.exe From this site (Major Geeks). The program has a tool to stop running programs and in fact stopped my explorer bar / start button from restarting. I did try to restart the program but now the machine says the program will not start in safe mode which it doesn't seem to be in. I'm using a Dell xps m 140 with windows xp sp 3 Please assist.:confused

Do a system restore or, go into advanced user mode and use " Last Known Good Configuration ", system restore is the more appropriate one though !

    Rusty ! :)

Also you can press ctrl/alt/delete brings up task manager and see if there's an explorer.exe running if there is more than one kill one of them then try if your sorted then, click on this link http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=208809 and follow all the instructions very carefully, post the required logs into the malware forum, and wait till the malware fighters get you sorted !
Or like i said earlier try " last known good configuration " in advanced user mode !

Just tried that to be sure, It didn't work. perhaps I should explain that this machine has several problems, no sound (driver problem) seems to have both 32 bit and 64 bit system programs. Both malware Malwarebytes form downloaded from this site and antivirus scans symantec 360 show clean. Computer temp and memory always higher than normal almost no programs in use by human user. also quite possible remote hacker monatering. also signing in to mail (yahoo) seems to sign me out of messenger also Yahoo. I was trying to clear up some of the other problems and oops, screwed up the start bar. ran some other scan from this site and, it said the free memory was low although this machine was never opened as far as I know

You can get to system restore by logging in on an Administrative account, then double click the "My Computer" desktop icon, then your C: drive, then Windows, then system32, then restore, then rstrui.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe

You could also double click the "My Desktop" icon, and on the left side of the screen you will (should) see a link to the control panel, and from there select "Appearance and Themes", then "Taskbar and Start Menu".

OK, I tried that and it said, (system restore cannot protect your computer at this time please restart your computer and then run system restore again) I did that to no avail.

Try starting the computer in safe mode (pressing F8 during the boot-up), log in under an Admin account, then try to uninstall the winbench 99 1.0.1, then try the system restore.
