    Hey, I know this sounds like a computer illiterate question, but i should know what I'm doing by. ( i guess I don't)

    My system is running great. When I attempt to open the control panel (by any means, including in safe mode) the windows explorer "encounters a problem and needs to close" I find this very strange, because I can use the explorer to do everything else. I have already tried re-installing windows by the "update method". I have not tried a complete re-installation, but I don't really want to because I just did that. I have also checked the drive for errors with chkdsk.

    If anybody can help it would be greatly appreciated.

    I have recently installed a new video card and reset the BIOS password using the jumper on the motherboard.

    Thank you.

    In the full details of the error it will give you a modname. What is it?

    Great catch, star17. Your link worked great. A must for researching stuff.

    If you try
    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=&count=100&type=

    Gets you back to the first entries alphabetically but I could not get the search to work.
    Every search I did returned me back to page 1. I ended up where I wanted to get, by guessing roughly where the entry would be, then forward or backward until I hit the entry I was after (DownloadAccelerator PLus). Does Search work for you and what am I doing wrong? Baz

    Hey, thanks. Do you know how to do that in XP home? All i have is an installation cd. no emergency startup. I was looking for some way to repair that registry entry. This might help.

    Thanks star17. Thought the search problem was me stuffing up. The only reason I was searching for DAPlus was to check out the comments that this site might have on it. In an earlier post I found 130 instances of pests when I installed DAPLus. Needless to say it was deleted and buried very quickly. Baz

    Not sure if you need to repair the registry yet. If so, you may need to restore a from a backup if you have one. But first lets try some other things.

    First did you do what Star17 suggested earlier and run a full virusscan of your PC. If not, do that. Also, have you run a spyware checker. I would run Ad-aware and then SpyBot Search and Destroy. Both are available on MG. Here are the links:

    Ad-aware --> http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=506
    SpyBot ---> http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2471

    Make sure you do the updates before running them.

    If you don't have a virusscan program try this:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=955

    Do a full scan of you system.

    If you still have a problem try the below steps:

    1) Navigate to C:\windows\system32 with WinExplorer. Select sort by File Type. No scroll down until you see the Control Panel Extensions. These are all .CPL files. Selecting one at a time, double click to run that control panel item. Check to see if they all load OK. Note which ones do not work if any. (This should be the same as selecting them from the Control Panel window if it were open.) If any of these are causing a problem, you can try to copy from your C:\I386 directory (or from your WinXP CD if you do not have the I386 directory. They may be compressed on the WinXP CD and if see will have to be expanded.)

    2) If all of these load Okay, then one other thing to try could be to install your version of Internet Explorer. Let's see if this gets us anywhere.
