I started having some serious problems last night, I was seeing that my cpu load was maxed out while i was totally idle, then later it started going from 100% to ~2% over and over again while my entire system was in idle. I went to system restore and to my amazement found no restore points!! Anyway, I'm not all that computer savy, but i came here and did all the tests, downloads and procedures the best i could. cool thing was, in the middle of it all (more specifically after the ccleaner I believe or perhaps after deleting a few programs that were not recommended), my system's cpu seemed to go back to normal. i continued the procedures outlined under windows xp malware removal however. Now, everything seems to be working pretty good, except i get these explorer windows popping up every few minutes while i'm using my firefox browser.

i didn't get any errors or have problems using the various removal programs, and ill attach the logs of course.

i'm running windows xp sp2. please let me know if you need any more info, i did try my best to follow all the guidelines before posting.

thanks in advance for any help.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You have the most recent form of a Vundo infection. I'm looking at your logs now and will work up a detail procedure. While waiting for me to post, do the below.

Uninstall Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.0_01 which is way out of date. Then download ( but do not install yet ) this Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 4

Okay after complete what I gave you in message # 2, continue with the below.

No wonder you are infected. You are running this PC without proper protection.

    • Download and save to RenV.exe from following link to Desktop ( it must be on the Desktop)
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it. Save it as Log.txt to your desktop
    • Now using your mouse, drag Log.txt onto RenV.exe
    • When finished, RenV.exe will produce a log names Log.txt on your Desktop which will overwrite the one you just made. Attach the new Log.txt to your next reply.
Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\wvwtr.exe
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7CBDE49F-BB45-4EC5-B4BC-DD4A0F113F0D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wvwtr.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8BD8C817-4AC2-5310-F71E-09CB41B024A0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gclx.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NBJ] "C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero BackItUp\NBJ .exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Rwrl] "C:\WINDOWS\CROSOF~1\ntvdm.exe" -vt yazb

Did you put the below in your Trusted Zone. We recommend not doing this unless you cannot live without it. Thus I suggest fixing the below, but you have be the one to know if they are required.
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.gomyhit.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.imageservr.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.imagesrvr.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.storageguardsoft.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.gomyhit.com (HKLM)
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.imageservr.com (HKLM)
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.imagesrvr.com (HKLM)
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.storageguardsoft.com (HKLM)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
After reboot look for all of the above files we had Avenger attempt to delete. If you still see them, delete them yourself.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Chaslang,

WOW! Surfing immediately after your procedures produced no pop-up explorer windows (ie, while running firefox). Further, upon rebooting the system seems to reboot very nicely (it was slugish and did all sorts of weird things before). All in all, so far, the entire system seems to be operating very smoothly, no problems to speak of.

Not sure if the system is entirely fixed yet because I'm sure no expert. Thus, I attached the files you asked for.

I would like to take this opportunity to give you my sincerest thank you. Help of the nature you gave me is so valuable and you (and others here) give it with such generosity. I really could never thank you enough is the honest truth.

    Andy

    You're welcome.

Now uninstall AVG Antispyware and then reboot. It got messed up during the installation by the infection you had.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps. Make sure you complete all steps in the given link so that you get properly protected. You have no protection at the current time.:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    10. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    11. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    12. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    chaslang,

well, i didn't get the two error messages upon boot up that time, haha, so i can't tell you what they said. a good thing i guess.

as for the anti virus, i'll just try another one of the downloads. the other recommended removers/detectors installed fine.

the java sun i still don't understand why it will not install though.

i think i can work everything out from here, just wanted to post the progress. in general everything seems to be running great!

    thanks again for everything!!!!

    You're welcome.

Not sure but you may have Windows Installer issues or a corrupt download. Try downloading again. If you still have issues, this is more of a problem for the Software Forum. But answer this, is Sun Java the only thing that will not install?

    chaslang,

Java ended up installing the next day for some reason, same procedure and exe file and everything. Weird. So, in the end, i got everything installed that I wanted to and am running great, and protected. but yeah, at first another one of the virus protectors wouldn't install as well. In any case, all seems to be running great, and i really can't thank you enough.
