Explorer Won't Run - gdiplus.dll missing

This morning Automatic Update downloaded critical updates and then restarted my computer (I had Explorer, IE and Excel running at the time). After restarting and installing the updates, I got a pop-up saying that Explorer won't run because gdiplus.dll is missing. I clicked OK and got a black screen, which I guess is understandable considering gdiplus.dll has something to do with the graphics.

    How can I fix this?

My Inspiron is running Windows 7.

    Does safe mode work?

I plan to try when I get home.

Anything I should check when I do?

I was considering doing a System Restore, but it's been a while since I saved a restore point.

Yes, system restore was going to be my next suggestion, if safe mode works. Then check for updates yet again.

I booted into Safe Mode and recovered the Restore Point created just before the Windows Update was done.

Result: Everything seems to be working again, even the applications that Recovery warned might not work because I was backing out the updates (e.g., Outlook, Office, etc.).

Unless something else comes up, I'd call this one closed.

    Thanks for your help.

It has just been suggested to me that I may be seeing the effects of a hijackware infection (including a W32/Alureon rootkit infection). I'll run an f-secure scan to check.
