    Hi,

Recently my computer is running extremely slowly. I started the Task Manager (CLT+ALT+DEL) and looked at the processes. I found that a process called “expmc.exe” was hogging CPU and memory. I stopped the process without any adverse effect and the system behavior became normal. The process restarts when I logout/login or restart the PC. So I now stop the process before I resume use of the PC.
Does anyone know anything about this process and how my computer got it? How to remove this process from my computer without doing any harm to my PC? I Googled for the process and came up empty. So it seems to be something new. I am running Win XP Pro on my pC.

    Thanks

    Hemkum

doesn't sound an exe that I know of.

Have you searched your system to find out where it's located?

also please follow all the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

Also goto start run and type in "msconfig" and look to disable it there.

    Hi Kodo,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I had gone through the tutorial step by step. Got rid of lots of junk. But this process is somthing that persists. Also could not find its path when I did the search! I did make sure that hidden files were visible. I did not save the logs so I cannot post them.

Did you try that alternate scans listed at the bottom of the tutorial while in safe mode?

Hi, I have never posted to this board before but I just wanted to thank who ever is running it. I ran into the expmc.exe process and could not remove it no matter what I tried. This board was the only link that came up when doing a google or yahoo search for this problem. I decided to write this message for the next poor fool who runs across this problem. My story…….

My Mother-in-law brought me her PC with viruses and adware all over it. ( 5 viruses and 560 entries removed via pestpatrol) . I cleaned up everything, but the expmc.exe process (which was taking up memory like crazy). The “exe” file was not located on the hard drive and all the anti-virus or anti spy/adware products I used would not find the problem. I followed Kodo’s link above in preparation to post to this site. I installed and ran through all the programs he suggested (which I recommend you do). Then I finally got to the step where it wanted me to install "Hijack this". I installed it and saw that there was line with expmc.exe. It was something like C:\Windows\Mircosoft.Net\expmc.exe (sorry I do not have the log) . I double checked and the file was not there (I had prevoiusly looked at hidden files/ searched all of hard drive and the registry, but had come up blank when look for this .exe). I selected only the expmc.exe entry and removed it using "Hijack this". I rebooted and everything is running as good as new.

    Thanks for the help!!!!

The line from Hijack this was something like:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [XXXXX] C:\Windows\Microsoft.net\expmc.exe
