i don't have any extensions in my chrome browser, but my guess would be that google's own extensions would update themselves, 3rd party extensions would have to be done manually.

The best ones I have used seem to update themselves. A tab will open when you open the browser that states that the plugin has been updated and on the page are the improvements. Some I remember noticing are NoScript, Ghostery, YouTube Flash Player. I think harmless is right about Google plug-ins but not sure.

I have 8 extensions for Chrome ... not counting the Google extensions. They all update themselves. I have one called Honey that just updated on the 31st of January.
