Im looking for a cheap external drive to put an image on. On that what is a good free program to get an image?

I recently bought a 1TB Western Digital My Book Essentials on sale @ Staples for around $65
By image do you mean an image of your HD?
If so you can try DriveImage XML

(PS: I have never used this software so I can't say if its good or if its bad)

I've had good luck with ToDo backup and Macrium.

My personal advice is if possible buy an external that is large enough to hold an image of your entire PC hard drive. (I find that backing up and restoring an entire HD is almost always trouble-free. Backing up and restoring just the OS partition is a bit trickier in Win7--doable but I've had to fix boot files almost every time.)
