    hi there,

i have an external hard drive that has suddenly stopped responding, and i get the following error instead e:/ not accessible I/O device error.

i tried reloading the driver from the disk, but it would not complete because it said the computer already had the capacity to read the drive (i think this was referring to the usb connection?).

i need to use this hard drive to back up my work so that i can finish getting rid of malware on the computer. any help is much appreciated.

If you have malware then it may well be that causing the problem. post over in the malware removal section. they can probably clean it without the need for wiping it

did you try to check the hard drive at safe mode ? Al so you can boot your computer with a live CD or Rescue CD to see if the hard drive is accessible or not.

i am currently dealing with a malware problem, but in order to solve the malware, i need to back up my data. this is what i was hoping to use the hard drive for.

Have you tried running checkdisk on it? If you are sure the drive letter of the external hard drive is E, open a cmd prompt and type
    Code:
    chdsk E: /f

I recommend you to create a rescue CD to deal with your malware problem. I recommend you to use Dr.Web Live CD, or KASPERSKY Rescue CD, with these you can boot up your computer with rescue CDs and then clean your computer from viruses then see how it goes.

Boot you computer in safe mode and see if the HDD is accessible or not.
