When I started my computer this morning, it booted so slowly that I thought it had taken a sleeping pill. When I unplug my external hard drive, only a couple of months old, it runs fine. I havr tried plugging into a different USB port and it makes no difference. Everything was fine when I shut down last night.

One clue might be that when I boot my computer, sometimes it hangs up during the startup. If I pull the plug on the external drive for a couple of seconds, it continues the startup. I immediately plug in the hard drive and after that it works fine.

Until today. It is a Western Digital 350GB drive.

USB items hanging off a computer can bog down startup. The solution, as you discovered, is to wait until it has booted up then plug in the the external drive.
