The drive can be read by my computer, but in disk management it doesnt recognize it as a NTFS drive. There is also no assigned disk volume. How can I mount the drive?

i don't know if this will work in vista, or if you have already tried it? does your drive still work (have you tried it on another comp)? i take it you've tried rebooting your comp, w/o your external h/d plugged in, or powered on? have you tried to remove the drivers for your external h/d in device manager? the screenshot i posted below is for xp. with your comp booted up, and your external h/d plugged in, go to device manager, and see if your usb drive is listed, if it is, then right click, and uninstall the drivers, you should be prompted to reboot (i'd disconnect your external h/d - when it's safe to). reboot, and try your drive, it should load the drivers on 1st install. g/l, sos

edit - i have a 250 gb my book essential that i've had for over a year, and haven't had any problems (3 xp comps, and 1 vista comp). although, i can't speculate how others use theirs, i don't leave mine plugged in 24/7. i only plug mine in when i want to use it.
