External HD recovery

I'm a college kid, and one thing we college kids do is party. I had a party over the weekend and some !@#$ got beer all over my external HD. And this poses a problem, because I use my external for storing images from my digital camera as well as music. I guess I never took into account the idiocy of others.

But now here is the dilemma. First of all, this has happened before and its been okay. But I guess my luck can't be pushed too far. What happened was yesterday I let it dry for a bit because initially it was not working, giving me a prompt that "USB something something power exceeded". After letting it dry for a few hours, it worked fine. Music was there, everything was gravy. And then it spit the same prompt at me, and now it won't turn on.

Now heres what I figure - I figure that my actual HD is totally okay in there, but whats messed up is the power supply. Now where do I go from here? I don't know what precisely to do. I'm letting it dry in hopes that it'll be okay after a while but now it does not even turn on. Do you think its possible to open it up and replace the broken content? Or is there some kind of service I could use that would do this for me? I'd rather manage the problem by myself but if I need special tools in order to fix it then .. yeah. Or is this a lost cause, and I've lost two years worth of pictures and six years worth of music?

Any advice is much appreciated

You are probably right the hd is ok and needs removing to another system for backup. You will have to arrange disassembly then you should be able to find a friend with a desktop to slave the drive to.
