External HDD is acting retarded

every time I plug in my external HDD with my Ipod and it goes crazy and my computer disconnects the Ipod and the external HDD not really sure why its doing this I was thinking of formatting it to Fat32 so that way it can read on my ps3 would formatting to fat32 help or would that do nothing.

 

XP and later will only format FAT32 if the drive/partition is less than 40Gb, iirc.

Check in Windows Management > Event Viewer > System logs for error messages that occur around the time that this happens.

 

Hey kaka, So it is only when you have your ipod and the HDD plugged in at the same time?

But they're both ok when plugged in seperately?

Have you tried any other USB devices in place of the ipod to see if you get the same result. if not, do so if possible.

Im thinking it might be a power issue, as in not enough [read: may need a new power supply unit]

Do you know what the specs are for your present PSU?

edit: i dont think fat32 would help even if it can be done in this situation tbh.

 

That worked it was plugged into a usb hub because this only came with 2 I could have sworn when I put it in the usb port on the computer it was doing the exact same thing, but now its working I can copy music from there and to it so I'm good now thanks again !
