My system boots up very slowly, and continues to run very slow. The only changes that I recently made were to uninstall Zonealarm, Adware and Symantec Antivirus using the control panel. I then installed Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. Recently purchased a copy of Registry Mechanic which has not improved performance. I did notice that when trying to install SP2, I received an error message that it could not copy Windows/system32 file. Is my registry corrupted? Any help would be much appreciated.

kaspersky is a bit of a ram hog. and you dont really need 3 antivirus programs installed. those are the only obvious flaws i can see.

your registry is not corrupted, you just have too many startup programs
use winpatrol to keep those inline, maybe uninstall those and get a good allinone virus program .. eg nod32 - or you could buy 1gb more ram.

Thanks. I only have Kaspersky installed. The others were uninstalled. I meant to say when installing SP3, I received the Windows/System 32 error. Could it be that the others are not completely uninstalled.

After removing Norton anti virus or McAfee AV it requires a removal tool to be run. Did you give the Norton Removal Tool a try in between uninstalling it and installing Kaspersky?

I did try the Norton Removal tool. Not able to use however since I do not have license # they ask for. My company had provided me with a complimentary download of its corporate version. Ran Winpatrol log and I still see it listed.

Thanks Lev....is there a removal tool for Zonealarm as well ? I ran the Norton removal tool and CC Cleaner. I also deleted many of the startup programs using Winpatrol. Somewhat hesitant to delete more startups since I am not sure if they are critical. My stem is still crawling!

Be sure to run the NRT twice

AS for Zone Alarm, I found this info:

Here is how to remove ZoneAlarm completely.

You can post screenshots of your start ups for us to take a look at. If you have Ccleaner installed then go to:

    • Tools
    • Start up
    • and screenshot the list

Also...open up task manager (be sure to show processes from all users) click on "processes" to alphebetize...and take screenshot(s) for us to see also

No. You don't need one. 9 times out of ten it will uninstall fine without need for additional measures. You can uninstall ZA from Start>Control Panel >Add or Remove Programs and when the list appears just click REMOVE opposite Zonealarm. After uninstallation run a cleaner like CCLeaner and also run the Registry tool cleaner within CCLeaner. Reboot.

Also doing what Kestrel suggested in the previous post would be helpful to enable us to advise what startups can be disabled on boot.

How do I run a print screen? Where do i open up Task Manager? Sorry, I am a newbie

Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to open Task Manager

To get a print screen press Fn + PrtSc at the same time or you can use an application like ScreenHunter 5 Free which you can download from here http://www.wisdom-soft.com/sh/sh_free.htm

My Task Manager sceenshot is 148.5 KB bytes and exceeds the file size to attach ( used word doc). There are 45 processes running. The only item I was running at the time was Firefox browser.

CCcleaner file size is 142KB bytes and exceeds file size also.
However there are 10 items with the key HKLM:RUN and 2 with the key Startup Common. I had already deleted 7 other items.

Here are the attachments. System performance has improved slightly; still very slow.

Re: Extrem should have mentionedely slow system

I should have mentioned earlier that I have gone thru all the maintenance steps prior to posting. Since disabling items at startup, my system now seems to be moving faster. One last question- When trying to download Windows SP3, error messages occur preventing me from downloading. Does this mean that there is a registry problem?
