Extremely slow Win XP Pro!!

A few days ago I decided to reinstall Win XP Pro to clean up my system.
    The result was horrifying!

My system now runs very slowly! All program startups takes more than 30 seconds og my mailprogram (Eudora 6) takes more than 4 minutes to start! That can't be right!
I have tried Adaware with newest update, Spybot search and destroy with newest update. I have removed q811493 security update. I have installed all others including sp1, which btw took more than 2 hours to install!
I tried services.msc and removed ALL services I didn't need according to BlackViper. I tried BootVis (although I wasn't neccesary. The boot time is not that long). I tried sfc /scannow. I tried sigverif. Still nothing!
My Taskmanager always says 100% cpu usage but it is different programs. Am I starting a program the mem usage meter slowly fills while the program gets ready to start.
It seems like it is the move fra HD to Ram that slow my system down especially after I tried to move some date from my 20 Gb drive to my old 6Gb drive. After that the system was really slow. Why is that?
I haven't tried to reformat. I was hoping to avoid that!
My computer is a Athlon XP 1700, 512 Mb 2700 Ram, 20 Gb IBM disc drive, 6 gb IBM disc drive.

BTW how can I change my bootdrive from the old 6 Gb drive (C-drive) to my newer 20 gb, which is two 10 Gb partitions?

    Please help! I am desperate!

    Thanks in advance

What program is it that is taking 100% CPU time?
If you can tell me that we might be able to find out why its going so slow.
    If you press ALT+CTRL+DEL
    then click on Processes.
    Arrange by CPU
Then see what program is using the highest cpu time

oh and you can clone the old 6gig drive to one of the 10gig partitions on the new drive if you have Symantec Ghost.
If not you'd be better off taking the 6gig drive out and installing from scratch with the 20.

That is the problem, SgtRedneck, there is not a specific program. Everything in the processes overview is normal.
    Everything just runs much slower!

    What about Safe Mode?

SO, after reinstalling the system was running ok including the cpu usage until you loaded your programs???

Your right, BootVis is not required, XP tunes bootup by itself automatically. Theres a couple possibilities if your at 100% CPU usage, you need to look at whats running as someone mentioned by checking processes. My first thought is to disable drive indexing. Right click on your C: drive, properties and uncheck the allow indexing box. Repeat for any other fixed hard drive. You could also disable system restore as well, if you dont use it. Try those 2 and report back.

wonder if it could be another case of that wonderful memory management patch from MS..??

    Meaning that they installed it?

    Or need it?

I know that in this case, its not the latter, as it only affects one program AFAIK, and the program was not for end users.

This assumes you are talking about Q815411 ;)

Why dont we try Safe mode?

If its ok there, use msconfig to narrow it down.

Or it could be a driver, or device, in which case, disable devices in Device Manager.

    Divide and conquer ;)

that they installed it. AFAIK, it affected system performance.

True, it does affect performance, but specifically, with an application.

Its a very remote issue with like 1 internal app that exhibited the symptoms after installing sp1 or sp1a.

This is the reason M$ hasnt released it as a Windows Update and is waiting until SP2.

Once the moronic PC Mags shut up about it, and MS rewrote the article for it, we no longer get requests for this hotfix.

It had a nice placebo effect, incidently :D

I would be curious to see if the poster installed this hotfix, however.

the only reason I mentioned this was because of this phrase in his original question which would be "an application" ;)

I have solved it although I don't exactly know what did it because I did several things:
    1. I uninstalled my antivirusprogramm Avast from Alwill Software.
    2. I removed the infamous browser hijacker CoolWebSearch.
I was hit pretty bad! Se more here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html
    3. I disabled indexing on my drives (thanks Major Attitude)
    4. I defragmented my system drive.

I suspect my antivirusprogram to be the culprit!

BTW: That is the problem with q815411. I thought it is q811493 that is the big performance problem?

    Thank you all!

811493 *used* to be a big performance problem.

Rest assured the new version on WIndows Update is fine. This was fixed a good while ago.

815411 addresses performance issues with an internal app, that consumers will not get or use, after installing SP1 or SP1a. However, MS worded the article badly and PC Mags jumped the gun and said it was a miracle cure, while in fact, it was a placebo ;) M$ rewrote the article ;)
