I read the MG box which appears when you enter a title.
I am a bit confused because I read some material that encouraged me to hide my ip but those MG entries seem to say you cannot and should not.

Can someone please clarify this for me.

Cnet has a program called EZ Hide ip and I wanted to know if it is advisable to use this. It reads as though it is a good thing and being new, it may supplanr the replies previously given.

Does anyone have a trusted program to protect your ip while online.
This program makes your ip seeem to be another one and your searches cannot be traced either.
    Thank you
    Peter

Do you use a router and have a home network?
If so, the IP that a forum administrator sees for you is the IP assigned by your ISP and NOT the actual address of your computer on the home network.
My current IP which changes about once a year starts with 174 and is assigned by Comcast. It gives a general location for me but is not my town. The current computer I'm using is actually at 192. 168.1.x (where x changes when I switch computers).

If you want to hide your IP rather than grabbing some unknown program, start reading about setting up a proxy. But be warned that using a proxy can slow down your browsing and you might be locked out of some sites because certain sites will not accept proxy IPs.

You could simply set this as your home page http://hidemyass.com/
and type all your bookmarks into the address bar there.

Yes, I use a router, have a home network, keep Windows updated, have both an a/v program and a malware one.
Also, do little surfing but it is very conservative.

It was athought and was not dure if most people knew something I did not. I think proxy servers sound like they can affect speed and block some sites.

There seem to be paid programs for businesses but I am not a candidate.

Thank you for clarifying this issue for me.

My question is: why would I want to hide my IP address and/or location? I am not doing anything illegal, or unethical, or whatever.

And if I did anything illegal, believe me, the authorities would not have any problems finding my IP address, despite having paid $29.95 to hide it...

Here is my IP address: 36.2.39.159 :wave

I was looking to be as safe as possible.
I did not know if most people use programs to hide their ip addresses so I inquired.
Now I know it is not necessary and possibly a regression in some areas as some sites will be blocked.
Proxy is a way to go but at a loss of speed and an inability to see some sites again.
I am fine knowing most don't use it and shoudn't.
I basically email and surf very conservatively.
My age and health are supported by the information I need on the web such as doctor's office log ins etc.

...and sometimes you don't feel like google saving information on every blasted thing you want information on!
Just because I want privacy doesn't always mean I'm doing something that is illegal.

That was interesting information abut India, thank you. It is a huge nation that is beginning to flex its muscles, not that the great powers don't.
    Let us hope for peace.

I guess if you have ilegal/immoral thoughts or tendencies, you think everyone does and your train of thought propmts you to advise and converse that way.
I have heard that Google keeps every thing you enter. I guess Bing and the others do also.
If you keep your head above water, morally, the odds are in your favor.
No one likes someone peeking into their private lives but it seems to be the trend.
I wish I had encouraging news. One day at a time. ;)
    Thank you for the information.
