F8 for Safe Mode not working

Win 2K; just updated virus defs (old ones were no more than 2 weeks old) in NAV Corp Edition. Getting backdoor.trojan alert relating to file in system32 folder "gygeeq.dll" It's active and I cannot quarantine or remove/rename it. I cannot boot into safe mode as F8 does nothing, PC just boots into regular Win2K. It's a USB keyboard, not ps/2, but I did not think that should make a difference. I'm in the process of trying to get rid of this problem, but would like any tips anyone can provide.

A search on the .dll here provides nothing, via Google I got 2 hits in Japanese that once translated seemed to discuss removal procedures through usual processes, but also seem to indicate safe mode use. What can I do to get into safe mode, or get rid of this infection...or is it a false alarm with the new defs? I'm using those defs in my laptop with no problem, and in fact that .dll is not present in the laptop, so I'm more suspicious of a genuine problem.

    TIA

Thought I'd post a follow up. I finally got the offending files deleted, and the registry cleaned out. All is well again. Did not find a patch or fix for it, but manually did the (un)dirty work. Interesting that I have found very little information on the web about the gygeeq file; even more interesting is to imagine how I encountered it, as I am quite careful about files. Perhaps via a rogue web page? The last of the files I was able to delete via the regedt32.exe program, a nice tip clued me to that.

I strongly suggest that you complete the procedure I gave to you and attach the requested logs. I seriously doubt that you have removed everything. In 99% of all cases of Vundo type infections (which you probably have) there are more (sometimes many more) hidden files from the infection. If it does not prove to be a Vundo infection then that will be great but you will also be more sure that your PC is clean by finishing those steps. Not seeing any symptoms, does not necessarily mean you are clean.

It is just one of the thousands of file names being used by Vundo type infections. They constantly change all the time.

Oh, I did run all the steps you suggest, and I am quite grateful for that info. Sure, I can run the logs and post them, see if you find anything I did not. When the infection was active my suspicion became aroused when I saw excessive modem activity (I can't get broadband in my location). The newest virus defs (about 2 weeks newer than the last) alerted me to the infection. Then when I opened the gygeeq.drv file via Wordpad I saw it was a key capture of everything I had typed recently. I spent a few days working out all the fixes, both with all this site's recommendations and a few registry tricks I learned elsewhere. As I say everything appears well now, but I will be more than happy to post some logs as soon as I can, thanks.

You need to ATTACH the logs that were requested in the procedure I gave you. You should not be posting an inline HijackThis log from an improperly installed HijackThis program. I need to see all of the logs requested. The HijackThis log is the least important and will automatically be included in the MGlogs.zip file in the requested procedure.
