Fail to install DirectX

I recently tried to update some software, (SiSoft Sandra), which required DirectX. The installation of DirectX failed, with a DirectX Setup error message saying 'A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted. Please verify the Cryptographic Services are enabled and the cabinet file certificate is valid.'

When i click on OK (the only option) installation fails.

I am a (relatively) naive user - have no idea what this means, and even less of what to do about it.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Hi

What Windows version and Service Pack are you using? very apt question in this instance.

    What version of SiSoft Sandra?

If you click Start > Run and type dxdiag and hit enter what version is your DirectX? (if you have Vista or Windows 7 you should be ok for Directx versions that work with Sandra)

If you have an older version than DirectX 9.29 then install the latest HERE

May need to follow this with the error message you gave http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;822798 if crypotgraphic services are disabled

    Thanks for prompt reply.

    1) Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit, Service Pack 2

    2) I was updating Sandra - it is now Sisoft Sandra Lite [Evaluation] (x86) 2010.7.16.52. (Even tho the DirectX installation, which the Sandra updating process invoked, failed - Sandra went on and finished updating. I have since tried installing DirectX directly from a Microsoft website - but hit the same error message.)

    3) I have DirectX Version 11

    4) I have clicked on this link you gave, but at a quick scan I don't see the exact error message I got. In any case, I know nothing about Cryptographic Services - if something is disabled that needs to be enabled - please advise how to do this.

Sorry I forgot to give the OS etc. info in my original post - I was being hassled to come to the table for a meal, and hurried the posting - there's a moral there, somewhere!

    Hi

Cheers on the info (know the meal time vs PC time thing only too well) as that helps greatly.

Enter Services and this you can do easily in Vista, just type services into the Start Search box and then it should show just click it.

then look for the Cryptographic service and double click it to open its properties, check that its started and its startup type is set to Automatic, if it is good, then click the Dependencies tab and you should see Remote Procedure Call click the + next to it and look at the Services listed note them all and thenh in turn make sure each one of them is Started and its Startup Type is Automatic.

then rather than download via the app as an update, download the lastest full version HERE and when installing right click and choose Run as Administrator.

    Thanks for this.

    1) Cryptographic Services says it depends on DCOM Server Process Launcher. Just the one thing.

    2) DCOM Properties Startup Type is shown as Automatic, but that line is greyed-out, and not available for me to examine further. I clicked on 'Help me configure service startup options' to see if I could 'bring this to life' - but I don't understand the Help page that opens. It talks about needing membership of various groups. What these groups are, whether I am in any of them, and how I would get membership if not, i haven't a clue.

    3) In the hope that 'Run as Administrator' might make the difference, I went that route (as you suggested at the end of your reply) to re-install Sandra and DirectX - but still hit the same roadblock.

If it has any relevance, I use Ashampoo StartUp Tuner, which controls (among other things) some Services, loaded when Windows starts. The only ones 'Deactivated' are Remote Registry and Terminal Services. From an unassailable pinnacle of ignorance, I'd say these are not likely to be the problem.

Thanks for help so far - I hope we can get somewhere without too much more effort (on your part - much appreciated)

    Dave

Sorry - this thread seems to have ceased. I still have the problem - and would appreciate getting to the bottom of it.
