My computer just went black and won't start up.
I tried to start from my windows disk and use the command prompt.
I type CHKDSK and it says "the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problem". Is it toast at this point or is there anything I can do?

Boot up a working computer then attach the suspected dead hard drive by a USB adapter to see if you can find your files.

usually when a hard drive dies, you do not get a black screen. You'd see an error message like "no bootable devices found".

If the screen is completely black when you fire up the computer then your video card/chip might have died. Do you see anything on the screen?

Can you hear the computer trying to boot up? If not, perhaps there is a problem with the power supply.

That suggests you are getting something on your screen and not just "black".

As plodr noted, you don't get a black screen at boot with a failed drive. Remember, when you first boot your computer, it goes through POST (power on self test) run by the BIOS first. You should see this on your monitor. Only after the computer passes the POST, then the drive is read to load the operating system. If the drive is bad or not present, that is when you would see no bootable devices found.

If you are able to see when you boot to your Windows disk, the PSU is likely working. And the graphics solution (card and monitor) is at least partially working in standard VGA mode.

Since my computer was otherwise usable I decided to just do a clean install on a blank new 1T sea gate HD. I installed Windows XP since it is an old Pentium D dual core chip. I installed and started up and now I have a blank clean install and no programs except internet connection. When I use internet explorer only some pages load. Others including Google.com now get an error load message. Why would a new install do this?

You may need to start a new thread in the software section since the hardware seems to be working now. Did you re-install all the necessary drivers? Is XP fully patched and up to date.

What exactly does the error say?

And my personal opinion here is you should be using Linux or a newer version of Windows if you plan on connecting to the Internet. XP is just not safe for you, or the rest of us.
