    HI, guys. I got home from work the yesterday and found that my system tray now has 2 Windows Security Center shield icons on it. One is the real deal since I have my Automatic Updates set to ask me when to Download and Install Updates and the other looks totally bogus. In fact I'm 100% sure it is. Clicking on the fake icon opens a window very similar to the real Security Center window but tells me I should download and install the programs - Ultimate Defender, Ultimate Cleaner and WiniFixe - which, through Google, I identified as evil.
    Upon Closing this window, eigther by clicking the close 'x' in the top corner, using alt+F4 or through task manager and selecting 'End Task', a dialogue box appears informing me how bad malware etc is and that I should install 1 of the 3 programs (a different option is given every time) and asks whether or not I'd like to do install it. To this the obvious answer is 'No'. I made the effort to do up some screen shots so you can see for yourselves.

    I have gone through the RUN & READ ME FIRST section and followed the tutorial as instructed except I forgot to save the SuperAntiSpyware Log and I couldn't be bothered going through it again.

    It appears that Avast! is doing it's job and preventing the program from acting on its own and as such I have not experienced any difficulties as yet. It's just annoying having the dialogue box appear every time I want to browse the net and the bubble from the icon is quite annoying too. I can't tell you how this got on my PC as I was at work and everyone here knows that I like to have CCleaner run after every internet session so history was deleted making it impossible for me to see what sites were explored that day.

    With luck (and probably some skills and knowledge) you guys might be able to help me get rid of this darn thing. Thanks

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window: (I have not loaded all the C:\posxxx.tmp files...there are too many for my little fingers to list, so please add them yourself)

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

    Be sure to tell us how things are running.

    Thanks for your speedy reply TimW, and your help too. I didn't expect to here from anyone so soon as I noticed a pretty large workload on these forums for you guys.

    Now, The second shield icon is gone and I don't get any dialogue boxes I'm not supposed to during browsing using firefox. After following these instructions, Windows Liv Messenger notified me of some new e-mails and after clicking the notification bubble a got a new alert box i have never seen before, something like 'Process.dll was unable to load'. It only happened this one time and hasn't happened since so I'm not thinking this is something of great concern.

    System performance was never noticably hindered and as such there has been no noticable improvement. I'm just relieved that this thing is gone - I know they have a habit of getting worse with time.

    I have attached the logs as requested, and thankyou again for your help.

    *EDIT*: Oops, I forgot all about disabling anti-virus etc. I hope I haven't stuffed myself up by forgetting. Please let me know...

    You need to delete all of these tmp files on your C drive....(as I said, I just don't have the hands or patients to do it for you:():

    Otherwise your logs look clean. Let me know if you have any problems removing all those files. :)

    If they all deleted successfully....and if you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
    2.
    * Click START then RUN
    * Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
    * Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    4. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    5. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    6. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
