My problem is a fan which is running high and nearly constantly. I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad P15s with Windows 11. My Windows and Bios updates are current. Neither firewall not Malwarebytes showing anything. When I look at processes in Task Manager, “shell infrastructure host” (sih) is consuming about half of used CPU. Used CPU ranges between 50-70% and sih 20-30%. Internet discussion suggests the problem may be the Windows 11 Photo app. To address, I changed my background to a solid color and changed the default app for Photos to something other than the Windows 11 app for all file extensions. Somewhat better since changes implemented yesterday but not fixed.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks, RB

A constantly running fan could also suggest a heat problem. What are you temps? You could use HWiNFO64 to view them. This program is very (perhaps too) informative so when using for the first time, I recommend you select “Sensors only” when prompted. Then scroll down to your motherboard’s section to see the temps.

Unfortunately, HWiNFO64 does not have a real-time system tray monitor. I use and recommend Core Temp to monitor CPU temps in real time. Under Options > Settings > Notification Area, I have mine set to display "Highest temperature" only.

Make sure your vents are clean of heat trapping dust. If handy and comfortable doing so, open the case and blast out the interior with compressed air or a can of dusting gas. If hesitant to open the, that's fine. But at least open all access panels to clean out any accumulated dust.

Blowing a desk fan from the side across the laptop can help determine if heat is an issue. The use of a laptop cooling pad can be helpful in many cases too to keep a laptop from over heating.

Last, laptop is lousy name for these devices since they should NEVER be used while sitting in a lap where proper air circulation may be restricted. Use the "notebook" on a flat hard, surface.

Thanks. Will install the temp app and check. Off to Staples this aft for compressed air and then cleaning. Will check out link on fix as well. Things seem to be better, he says optimistically, as the day goes on. Maybe some laptop "learning" given Bios update and change from Windows 11 Photo app.
    Best, RB

Staples is fine, but Walmart - or even Lowes or The Home Depot will have those cans, and probably cheaper. Do note, it is NOT compressed air in those cans, but hazardous gas (typically a refrigerant). So use in a well ventilated area.
