Wife's computer keeps getting filled with Ad Ware after using Farmville on Facebook. I'm able to get it cleaned up, but then they come back after a couple of days. I have AVG Free installed (which has been great for years) but it's not catching this adware issue. What can you recommend to install that will run in the background like AVG to catch the adware.
Also, would you recommend installing and using Firefox instead of using IE?
Thanks in advance for any and all your assistance.

We recommend SuperAntispyware and MalwareBytes to have as back up scanners. Frankly we do not recommend Ad-Aware. It is too full of scareware now days. I suggest you look through this thread:

Running AVG with a complete scan of C:\ finds the below within 30 seconds of starting. Now here is the kicker, I did a system restore, ran AVG but selected ONLY the C:\WINDOWS folder and it found zero problems. Turn right around and ran the full scan and it finds the below problems as mentioned before with in 30 seconds of starting.

    "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe (3868):\memory_001b0000";"Trojan horse Adload_r.AKH";"Object is inaccessible."

    "C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe (936):\memory_001a0000";"Trojan horse Adload_r.AKH";"Object is inaccessible."

    "C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE (1508):\memory_001a0000";"Trojan horse Adload_r.AKH";"Object is inaccessible."

Now, why would AVG find Trojans in C:\WINDOWS on a full scan, but not when I run it directly against that folder?

When you scan only C:\Windows, you are just scanning the files in the Windows folder and all subfolders ( if subfolders are elected ). When you run a full scan, you scan all memory too, and the registry and the rest of the hard disk. The problems that AVG is reporting on a fullscan are items in memory that are hooked into the running processes of those files.

You need to run the below:

    Chaslang,
Thanks for your assistance on this matter. The wife's computer is 8 years old. So after getting clean passes with SuperSpyware, Malware Bytes (which I purchased both of these via MG) and AVG, the wife got popups with-in the first 5 minutes of being online. I said the heck with it, got in the car and bought her a new computer. (after 8 years with minimal work, I think it was about time)
Now the question I have for you is. As a Malware/Virus expert, the below AV programs you have on your "how to protect against malware" thread, which one do you most recommend?

Thanks in advance for your continued assistance.

    You're welcome.
Currently ( and for at least year or more ) that would be AntiVir.

Thanks again chaslang, after doing A LOT of reading and research, the 2 that I keep going back to based on testing results is COMODO and Bit Defender? Do you or anyone else reading have an opinion on these 2 AV programs?

Comodo can be a resource hog and I don't believe BitDefender is freeware. I have been running Microsoft Security Essentials and have been please with it for the last year or so. It really is up to you and how easily the software works on your system.

I don't have a problem paying for it, if it will end up saving me a lot of headache down the road.
I have come to the conclusion that they all (AV Programs) have their good points as well as bad points.
I have decided to go with Comodo as the wife does not DL ANY programs from the Internet and her browsing is pretty much limited to Facebook (which I understand is a great place to get infected with Malware/Adware/Spyware) Realistate sites, Youtube and a personel message forum that she runs that is member only (not opened to the public)
I also plan on installing SuperSpyware and Malware bytes but set it to only run when she selects it to do so.

Thanks for everyone that replied for taking the time to read and reply. :)

As with any AV program, it needs to be updated frequently. It sounds like you have yourself protected as well as can be. And you are welcome. Safe surfing. :)
