Does anybody know what Critical update or Regular updates to avoid and not install from Windows update? I hear some of them can mess up the computer. Thanks.

The only ones I have had issue with were yanked, or fixed.

I dont have any problems with the current batch.

Everyones PC can have different problems with some of the updates from MS... personally I have had none but I DO read the descriptions carefully as not all updates are needed eg. I may not use a certain peice of software or hardware thats affected.

If in doubt dont install the update right away wait a week and see if others are having problems, IF you want to install use a backup program ( Ghost ) or use system restore.

what about the Q....310? I think this one is causing me problems. When I do a clean install my DSL connection works fine, but after I install this, I get "Page cannot be displayed". I also installed the fix for it in Windows Update, same problem. I try to remove this hotfix, and it warns me many programs may not function properly. I believe it is safe for me not to install this at all because it warns "this sercurity hole can only effect you if other people login to your computer".. I am the only one who uses my PC so I am safe right?

Only serious problem I'm aware of came from very early IE 6 and many WInXP patches (especially pre-SP1).

Never had any trouble with Win2k, and 9x hasn't had a new patch in ages (except blaster).

Do you have the full number of that update?

I'll do some research on it.

I just did another clean install because after I installed this fix, I couldn't connect to the internet. I even tried to uninstall it, but I still had the problem. All I got was "page could not be displayed". I am now very very careful about what quick fixes I install to my comp. If I'm not totally convinced I need it, I will leave it alone.

Well, I'll look into this, but TBH I am not sure how anything in that hotfix would cause net issues.

    Immac,

There is definitely something going on on your machine that is not the fault of the hotfix. Tens of millions of people have that hotfix running absolutely trouble-free on their machines.

I'd have to agree with HALO. Seems it depends on the machine, and other variables. I have an HP, and I know many of them have crashed & burned from installing SP1. But HP has a patch to install, before you install SP1, that makes it go smoothly. And the problem was only with the Pavillon series, and not the other HP models. So I guess that tells it all right there. Seems to be a toss of the dice with the patches
