lately if i try to save a link anywhere but the root directory, it disappears! no matter if i do it with "add to favorites" or with ^d, it is simply not there the next time i go looking.

there is no sort of error msg or anything. from all appearances, it LOOKS like the link has been saved. but it hasn't.

the only exception is the root directory, which is acting normally. so for now, i'm putting EVERYTHING there, and then moving the links afterwards (either with "organize favorites" or by hand in explorer). they appear just fine and they work just fine after so doing. but not if i direct them there in the first place.

    any thoughts?

Please post which browser you are using as well as version number, operating system and version.

That will help others help you. ;)

sorry -- i'm usually so anal about OVER-posting all that stuff; i dunno how i forgot here.

IE9 on w7. updates etc all up to date.

i also use FF and Opera sporadically, but haven't noticed any probs there yet. likewise, haven't noticed any OTHER sort of problems in IE itself lately. just this favorites/folders thing.

reboot alone didn't change anything, btw.

and the folders aren't overly "nested". i know i had some problems in XP with files 12 or 13 levels down, overflowing some 128 or 256-character limit for filenames. not the case w current problem -- folders are only 2-3 levels deep and nodes above all relatively short names.

plus the fact that these are the same folders i was saving stuff to on and off all these months.

I found this at the Windows 7 forum when searching "can't add to Favorites"

I actually HAVE the "Links" folder, tho what purpose it serves, I do not know. There's 3-4 random links in there; nothing to do w favorites one was or another.

"Favorites" is a separate folder. I have about 20 links in there -- 2 or 3 new ones done as tests here -- and 8 or 9 folders like "music", "videos", "workstuff", etc. etc., all of which are blocking new adds on the fly (again, no problem drag/dropping into them after the fact). i have a few hundred links scattered among the various subfolders.

Were the ROOT directory not working normally, I might be asking whether there was an overall LIMIT to the number of links storable (500 total or whatnot). But since I can still add things no problem -- just not WHERE i WANT TO -- this seems unlikely.

In any case, I'm not seeing the "Links" (folder) connection.

Do you have the favorites folder location at this folder?

    c:\users\<your-name>\favorites\

Try disabling Protected mode and see if you can save a link to favorites.

    yes

    how so?

the "security" settings on the properties tag for the faves folder are all set to "allow" and "full control". so i guess u mean somewhere else?

I meant the protected mode in IE9 options.

    Tools>Internet Options>Security tab

Uncheck the "Enable Protected Mode" box if it is checked. Can you save to Favorites?

We suffer similar issues at work "quite often" but that is circumstantial (Federal Govt., Software Licenses and support, etc) damn where still on IE6!

IEx.x is a very vulnerable product and there are far superior and Secure browsers to use!

It sounds like you are having a "volatile" environment (turn PC off and DATA disappears).
    - Is this only occurring in IE9 or also in FF Chrome, etc?
    - Save a DOC to desktop, is it there on reboot? (corrupt profile??)
    - What version of JAVA do you have?
    - What Security software are you running?
    - Last time a "thorough security" scan run was undertaken?

If you can export the bookmarks to another browser and then save a couple more and see if they persist on reboot it would be very informative.

Sorry, I misunderstood the point of the "Links" folder in my last post. They represent that bar I have up top.

That seems to be working just fine. My problems are with the regular Favorites pull-down menu.

Turned off "protected mode" but no change. Saves to root dir work just fine; saves to other folders nogo unless I first save them to root dir and then move them by hand somehow.

You did not move the favorites folder but if you use the following command

    icacls <Favorites Path>

    Do you get the response.

    Mandatory Label\Low Mandatory Level: (OI)(CI)(NW)

    If not then try:

    icacls <Favorites Path>/setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low
